  1. I just can't see Sabbath working at Reading and Leeds myself, unless they're trying to totally change the dynamic of the festival again.

The way Reading has been in recent years theres been no place for an old school rock act, I can't see why they'd risk their audience.

Someone who is a Sabbath fan wouldn't go to Reading to wath them, that showed with Download last year, tickets didn't fly out the door and Reading is going to appeal FAR less than Download did.

  2. MCR are more popular with the major demographic of Reading these days. The Cure were not.

The same happened with the Killers and Pixies a few years ago - arena packed for the killers, they finish, everyone went off to find someone more "trendy".

Had it been at a festival with an older audience then the cure would have a bigger audience than MCR every day.....

My view. The Cure ruled Reading this year.

  3. I have to say, the one band that would sell me the ticket for next year is No Doubt.

I hated Gwens solo chavvy stuff, but there is something ultimately nostaligic about Spiderwebs and Just a Girl that would be awesome to see.

I suppose its debatable, but could No Doubt Sub with their back catalogue?

  4. Was my 8th Reading since 2003.

2003 was the best up until this year. Camped with about 25 friends from all over the world which helped. The atmosphere was incredible, especially for Foo Fighters and Greenday. No worries about idiots burning everything in the campsite and causing trouble it was nice and relaxed.

The weather definitely helped. I have so many good memories from this year, and the Foo's wrapped it up perfectly.

The last few years the only thing that has made me come back was the lineup. Now I think I might go again next year regardless of lineup.

Although saying that it was probably a good a send off I could have for my time at Reading, maybe I should draw a line underneath it for now.

  5. apparantly some guys at reading got told by benn that the killers, blur and pearl jam were not an option for next year, but kol he would consider.

If KOL returned and headlined, you can kinda see a reason to make up for last time - UK exclusive too, would that rule The Prodigy out of headliner due to having subbed a different day back in 09 too?

  6. Fair play, don't get me wrong, would LOVE to have seen MFATGG's but just couldn't tear myself away from the Foo's, even though i've seen them 4 times before! Loved it, but was also easier as we were all heading off home straight after so we all just stuck together.

Real shame about The Cure for me as I realise how iconic they are so I wanted to check them out; I'm sure yourselves and loads of others loved every minute, but not for me this time around.

  7. We joined The Cure during the middle of their set, and tbh I only knew about 5 of their songs. Constant monotone wailing from Smith throughout that I just had to leave, and they had as much presence and personality on stage as lamposts.

At The Drive In were a little better, but he just moaned at the crowd and they missed their best song (Invalid Litter Department). Way better when I saw them about 11 years ago in the Astoria.

Was going to miss Foo Fighters and watch MFATGG and LTJ but couldn't pull ourselves away after watching the first hour - signs of a quality set for me.

  8. Only saw 7 acts all weekend so here it goes -

Late Night Gimp Fight - 8 - What a way to start the weekend. Very very funny and dark! Unfortunately marred by sound and visual problems out of their control but I will still give them an 8 for their One Direction "You know you're a peadophile" skit!

    The Cure - 10 - No words!

Billy Talent - 8 - not a big fan, but my wife likes them. A very tight band and awesome sounding live - had the crowd in the palms of their hands - good live band!

Feeder - 9 - Missed some of my favourites, but Just a Day and Buck Rodgers was awesome!

Black Keys - 7 - I imagine these guys to be awesome at their own gig - unfortunately the crowd was a bit flat for them and the atmosphere didn't rise - good performance by them though!

Foos - 7 - seen them before, they did nothing different, sounded the same. The rumours in the afternoon of Tenacious D doing a surprise set and Kris joinging them on stage for Nirvana hits kind of took the edge off it when nothing really special happed as promised...... I dunno, I guess I was just so up for my next act.....

MFATGG - 10 - Outstanding. Been waiting 12 years to see them and they were everything I imagined! Brilliant, funny, energetic and they ripped the place apart.

I simply cannot choose who was better - Cure or MFATGG.......

  9. Back to reality now, so thought I would give my views on what was an EPIC weekend.

This is the first Reading I have done since 2006......and my how things have changed!

Back in 2006 the riots/sunday night fires etc put me off going back - too much stress to keep your tent from getting burnt etc and I realised how old I was at 22 years old then!

But I have had my faith restored in what was a truely unforgettable weekend.

Ok, the people we were with, met and camped with hold a massive part of this. But the festival itself held its own and the improvements made in the last 6 years have made this festival safe and friendly for all ages.

The demographic seems to have gotten younger in my opinion - but that was not really a massive issue as most of the "younglings" respected our MASSIVE camp of "oldies" - not bothering us, realising when they were being too loud and actually telling their own mates to respect us! We of course returned the fabour and made sure they were all ok as we knew it was their first time! When a group of 16/17 lads who were camping next to us come to us on the Thursday and apologise in advance for being immature and young we knew we were all good - the fact that we were up much longer than them in the evenings before they burnt themselves out was a testiment to the audience this year.

Everything ran smoothly in the campsites and arena - the changes, no matter how subtle, have been brilliant - I could go on writing for umpteen pages about how good a weekend I had - but words do not describe!

Special mentions go out to the Cure, who were simply magical - A Forest will remain with me forever. I am so so so glad I sacked off the Foo's after the first half hour, went to the bar and loo and expected the Lock Up to be rammed for MFATGG, yet we walked stright in and about 4 rows from the front with loads of room for what was an on par perfoemance with The Cure! Spike and Fat Mike ripped the lock up a new one and had the audience eating out of their palms.......simply brilliant.

I will also add that the crowd in the lock up tent on sunday were by far the friendliest we experienced.

Bands I saw all weekend - The Cure, Billy Talent, Feeder, Black Keys, Foos and MFATGG.......only 6 bands, but thats all I wanted to see and the campsite filled the rest of my time.

All in all a 10/10 weekend for me. Well done Festival Republic - everything was perfect and we all had a brilliant time in Camp Claw!

Who knows, I might even book a ticket for next year!

  10. 1. MFATGG - How no one else has said these guys yet in this thread is beyond me! They are going to be EPIC!

    2. Cure - Simple enough.

    3. Feeder - Seen them before, numerous times, but what a festival band is all about "I got a CD Player"

    4. Billy Talent - Never seen them and they have been on loop on my iPod - Love them!

    5. Late Night Gimp Fight - a friends comedy group who are making it big - should be hilarious!

Special mention goes to Dry the River, Foos, Band of Skulls, Pulled Apart by Horses and Mark Lanegan.

  11. Haha, I came in to post about Late Night Gimp Fight. Seems my good friend mikecloud1984 beat me to it. I didn't know you still looked at these forums mate.

Anywho....I highly recommend watching LNGF. Seen them countless times over the last few years now. Brilliant sketch comedy for those of you with a slightly sick sense of humour!

  12. Ban anyone who is not their for a full festival experience.

No word of a lie - this happened to me back in 2006.

Queing for the bogs, as you do, when to young ladies (17/18) dressed up to the nines. Designer wellies, sunflower in a the hat they woudnlt normally wear, hotpants and a can of strongbow......you know the type.

One of them turns to the other and says "I know what we can do, how about we head back to the campsite for a bit, then to the arena and then we can go back to the hotel to wash our hair and have a shower before heading back for *insert innane pop punk band here*"

I turned around and just stood there is utter disbelief that these girls had pitched a tent in a campsite but had a hotel room to go to "incase things got too much" - ridiculous.

If you are not prepared to stink, not wash, drink till you cant see and generally enjoy all the festuival has to offer....GTFO.
