  1. I've enjoyed followng this forum for months now in the vain hope that Soni UK would return in 2013. I thought the 2009,10 and 11 festivals were excellent - great bands, well organised, a really good vibe from other festival-goers and just up the road from where i live. I think they have found it hard to compete with Download and that is a big part of their problem - epecially with a supposedly limited number of headlining acts being available or deemed suitable. For some time now i have thought that Sonisphere UK should try to find its own niche or find other ways to appear different to DL ... for example if they are struggling for headliners then give newer bands a chance ( with their traditional strong under card) or run a cheaper, two day festival instead. For me the best thing about the music at Sonisphere was the mix of genres and the strong undercard with many new or unfamiliar acts ....... The headliners weren't what attractive me, especially in 2011. This year i had hoped for the traditional mix lower down the bill with one or two large headliners and at least one newish band being given the chance that biffy were in 2011. I agree that Soni UK Is now dead and think its a great shame ..... I just hope that something else rises from the ashes as Soni had a great vibe and a fantastc location, it just needs its own identity and to be prepared to take chances. One of the greatest failings of Soni UK, which any future festivals should be mindful of, was their poor communications and lack of engagement with their audience ........ How long have we been seeking info on Soni 2013???? And what also happened last year?? Thanks for all your banter, it has amused me ...... You never know it may all start again with "will Soni UK 2014 go ahead"!!!!

  2. It's all down to personal taste but i like the look of Soni this year.

We've been every year so far because it's just up the road from us and the line up has always been really good. This year isn't their strongest line up (so far) but there are lots of bands here that i'd like to see.

For what it's worth i think that Kiss, Queen and the Darkness will be hugely entertaining and i'm looking forward to seeing wolfmother, evanescence, flogging molly, lacuna coil and almost all of the Sunday bands announced so far.

Now i'm just hoping that alice in chains, skindred, enter shikari and a whole host of classic rock bands ( Black stone cherry, the answer, rival sons, etc) will be added.

Soni 2012 might have a slightly different 'feel' compared to other years but i'm looking forward to it.

  3. Marilyn Manson would be a great billing for the Friday .... help add to the usual carnival spirit, especially if Kiss headlined that day.

Mastodon are a great band and have done two blinding performances at Soni so far .... but their billing could be affected by having recently toured and already playing 2 out of the 3 sonispheres so far.

What are Alice in Chains doing at the moment? If they played Soni again i'd buy my ticket immediately!

  4. Saw Mastodon on Saturday (Brixton) supported by the Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang - awesome gig, really hope they all play Sonisphere this summer.

FNM and Queen seem pretty definite now but it's all gone quiet concerning a third headliner. Maybe they'll go back to the same format as in year 2 .... a second stage headliner only on the Friday? That would leave the door open for a newer band like Bullet.

I just hope we get announcements very soon!

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if Queen did something like AC/DC did at Download in 2010 - bring loads of their own stuff along and almost make their headline act a separate Gig. Remember the AC/DC stage at Download???

Sonisphere would definitely want Queen - but now they have to get a suitable undercard ( or whatever you want to call it!) to prevent the festival from losing its reputation and general good vibe.

Oh and btw 'Jump' i've obviously heard of FNM but only listened to their one or two most popular songs in the past and didn't really care to venture further into their back catalogue!!??!?!?!?!!??!!?. Personally i prefer Queen .... but ideally without Mr Lambert, obviously!

  6. Not sure i agree about slim pickings ... i get the impression that a number of their potential bands have been reluctant to make decisions and suspect that maybe money has been a factor.

I had a number of leaks from very good sources last Autumn about Rush, Van Halen and Kiss ...but so far nothing has happened on those fronts. The FNM/Queen rumours have been around for a while but still nothing has been announced.

Personally, i don't think the lack of a third headliner is their only problem ... i think they could announce just the two headliners but something else is causing them problems. No idea what tho' but just looks that way to me.

Btw .... there's been a lot of positive comments on here about FNM. I've Spotified them and am most unimpressed by what i've heard - seems pretty MOR to me! What's their good stuff?

  7. I think quite a few of us have received strong reliable news on FNM and Queen for dome time now. My main hope is that we get Queen and friends instead of just X factor boy .... Queen will be excellent but i fear for Mr Lambert receiving a bottling!

I heard over a week ago that Sonisphere are still in negotiations with the third headliner .... but that any leaks could result in them just walking away. Hence all the secrecy

Fingers crossed for an announcement soon

  8. I thought the 2010 lineup of Alice Cooper, Rammstein and Iron Maiden was fantastic and I really enjoyed all three headliners. I, for one, thought Maiden played a blinding set and fair play to them not wanting to simply do a greatest hits set ..... however i was surprised they didn't play the trooper!

From the Scuzz programme i think the obvious one (according to all postings from 'inside sources' and my own contacts) is FNM.

Been thinking about Queen 'n' X factor boy over the weekend whilst listening to some of their back catalogue ( the good older stuff!). I think they'd be far better off doing an arena tour or performing at Knebworth in their own right like RHCP. If this is some form of final tribute to Freddie then all the better for having it in front of 50,000+ Queen fans singing every word. At Soni, i suspect they'll want to film the gig, but many of the crowd won't be Queen fans and their reception won't be quite as enthusiatic as a real Queen crowd. I just think Soni might not be in their best interests tbh

  9. I've had yet another nod towards FNM and Adam Lambert supported by Queen (!) today ... so i think they are both extremely likely to play presumably headlining Fri and Sat .

However no consistency from my contacts re: Sundays headliner . Rumours include aerosmith, smashing pumpkins, GnR , Kiss, Van Halen or maybe even bon jovi (find that hard to believe!)

So looks like its anyone's guess ....... Im just hoping for a strong and varied undercard hopefully including Korn, Alice in chains, skindred , rival sons, bfmv, black stone cherry, periphery and cancer bats .

  10. Personal preferences .... but i reckon the Darkness would be a superb festival band.

Saw them at Cambridge recently and they put on a fantastic gig. Imagine them subbing for Queen ....yes, it'd all bit very cheesey and more than a tad camp .... but it'd be a fantastic festival experience.

I am now sitting tight waiting for the abuse .........

  11. Well we won't know for sure for at least a week and i get the impression that news is really being clamped down on Soni this year. But (from postings here and mutterings within the industry) i think there's a very strong chance that FNM will headline Friday and Queen Saturday .... what's therefore of more interest to me is who will headline on the Sunday?

I can't see Kiss wanting to go against Queen and really find it hard to believe that slash will want to perform with axl again.

Personally i would like to see a newer, heavier act to headline. I thought the Biffy decision last year was very brave but paid off, so i'd like to see a similar decision this year. It would help underline the alternative festival ethos and if Queen are expensive then a cheaper booking on Sunday might be an attractive proposition.

What about Bullet for my valentine for A7X headlining?

  12. What interests me about these posts is why people go to certain festivals.

I've been to all three Soni's so far and whatever the headliners are in 2012 i shall go again. I like the people, the vibe and the great undercard of up and coming acts. And don't give me all that bullshit about age .... i'm in my late 40's and see loads of blokes like me at Sonisphere. What's more we are taking our teenage kids with us and getting them hooked on rock/metal and festivals.

TBh i've been to downlaod many times but prefer the atmosphere, and smaller size, of Sonisphere.

So, my only real concern about headliners is how they effect the evolution of sonisphere as an event and how they change the dynamic of the crowd. I do not want to be surrounded by a bunch of young, chavvy X factor fans ... give me rock fans (of all ages) any day!

In the first year of Sonisphere didn't you detect a real change in the vibe between the Linkin Park and Metallica days? .... i want the festival to sell out early so we get a good rock crowd for every day - like i think we got in 2011.

  13. Total agreement from me as well. I know that Soni's strength is usually in its breadth of great bands but i'd be a bit pissed off with FNM, G'n'R (if they ever eventually appear onstage) and Adam Lambert supported by Queen.

Fingers crossed that this line up doesn't come about .... but there are still many other potential headliners out there so i remain hopeful.

I'm intrigued why they won't be making any announcements for another 2 weeks - on the face of it that might appear to be poor organisation/communications but surely there is a good reason for this. Maybe the announcement will actually be, in the words of Kerrang, unbelievable?

    Who knows
