  1. sorry if that came across as harsh but i just found seadragon's suggestion that he was being lied to to be an extreme overreation.

i think there's a good chance we're overthinking a situation that we have too little information about. as you say, it doesn't seem likely that hawley would really be requesting special favours, and if EOTR really wanted to recoup some money on the festival then this would not be the most efficient way to go about it. 50 day tickets sold exclusively through richard hawley's website is not going to break the festival and all the people involved have delivered some really good times to all of us. in the absence of anything bad actually happening beyond a little confusion i think they've earned the benefit of the doubt.

as to the size of EOTR these days, and the general repetitiveness of the lineup, i do understand seadragons disappointment, but its important to see it in context. yes EOTR has gotten big but that's why they started NDH, which will probably be the smallest festival in the country to feature an act that's played the RFH. as to the lineups, i do wonder how much of that is down to who they can book for money that wont bankrupt the festival. having good relationships with the bands must make it easier to convince them to play your small festival for less money than latitude offers. the NDH lineup isn't as dramatic as the first EOTR one but then that festival lost a barrel load of money, and NDH has quality running all the way through it, even if it is familiar to some of the regulars. i doubt i'll ever get bored of andrew bird or dirty 3.

i guess what i'm saying is that it's easy to loose perspective when talking about something that means as much to people as these festivals. i recall some of the joanne newsom discussions last year getting pretty heated too! i'm still pretty sure everything will turn out ok - if not this year then next (assuming NDH gets a second year, which is a whole other but significant worry).

  2. Well YLT played the second year of EOTR, back when it was still very small, and have demonstrated their affection for the EOTR organisers by flying to the UK for one show - headlining EOTR. I don't expect them to play NDH but I wouldn;t rule it out on principle.

With the financial squeeze on the music industry things are definitely getting harder for festival organisers but Fiona and Simon have always punched above their weight. If this festival slips into folky mediocrity I would be very surprised indeed.

  3. So the first band announcements for Primavera are through (Bjork, Codeine, GBV, Jeff Mangum, Yo La Tengo, Other lives). Any chance we'll get some announcements for NDH soon given that it's a week afterwards? I need to persuade friends to choose Sherwood over Barca, which isn't an easy task on the face of it.

  4. for everyone complaining about the joanna newsom slot at the end of the festival, bear in mind that every night ends with one band playing on their own. joanna's starting half an hour early and you don't like the headliner - it's annoying but it's not like it's without precedent. there's always the after hours action in the tipi!

for my part, i'm absolutely loving this lineup barely 2 hours a day when there's not someone i have to see and no time at all when there isn't someone worth watching. sad about okkervil rive/mogwai and josh t pearson/wild nothing clashes, but i think i've got off lightly all told.

EDIT: also, thanks to the people who've put together the clashfinders. invaluable as always.

EDIT: and to the person who described joanne newsom as having 'comparitively minority appeal', can you clarify in comparison to who? joanna has sold out the rfh two nights in a row which i'd argue makes her at least as popular as mogwai and well in front of beirut. if anything, the fact that she's not scheduled against anyone is to prevent the other act's crowd from being seriously diminished.

  5. i think having a go at people trying to find tickets is a bit harsh. the festival sold out right before the end of the month and a lot of people's pay days. if people had been saving up to buy one then getting on your high horse about forum posts seems a bit cruel - it's certainly the case for two of my friends (not that they've resorted to forum posts).

anyway, the ticket exchange will open soon and all of ugly desperate people cluttering up the nice clean forum will go away. no need to panic.

  6. I've given this some though and my only real concern with the festival getting bigger is what happens when a really popular act draws a really large crowd. as long as people stay evenly distributed about the site, in terms of acts, dancing, drink and food then i doubt anyone will notice the difference, but if the balances shifts at all then wherever the popular band/dj/food stall is will start to suffer pretty seriously. to make sure it doesn't you basically have to engineer clashes between acts to make sure the crowd stays even. In the past EOTR has been very good at juggling its bands so you could catch at least some of all the best bands - it's going to be much harder to do this year. If you consider that we've had a steep ticket price rise (or those that didn't get early birds will have) and a size increase and the possibility of seeing less bands than last year there is certainly a sense of trepidation about this news.

Balanced against this is the fact that for the past 4 years EOTR has been my favourite festival by a length, and that's not exclusively down to the sense of quiet and space that we're all worried about protecting, but also about balancing the best acts, food, drink and entertainment together to make a really perfect weekend. Whilst I'm worried about the balance of the festival I'm also really excited to see what the organisers have come up with this year and I'm kind of glad they've not rested on their laurels.

So yes, we can be worried if we like but at the end of the day the evidence that this will damage the festival is incredibly slight compared to the excellent record of simon and sofia. Balance your worries with a little trust and I reckon all will be well.

  7. so now we have the three main headliners - beirut, mogwai and joanna - plus on the website 7 other bands in the same size font. can we assume then that these are the big top headliners and the second to last bands on the garden stage. but given that that only accounts for 6 bands, what do we do with the mysterious 7th band? is it likely that one of these will be the thursday night headliner or will that be kept at least slightly secret? i'm intrigued...
