Festival of World Cultures 2009


The Festival of World Cultures is now in its 9th year and takes place over two days, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August, in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.

This year's musical line-up features Malian songstress Oumou Sangare, French singer Jane Birkin, Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan are among the international world musicians headlining this year.

The full programme includes N.C. Dun Laoghaire is set once again for a spectacular global carnival weekend, which will see more than 800 musicians and artists, plus another 1,000 participants and volunteers descend on the seaside town to take part in over 150 live gigs, performances and events throughout the town.

The Festival offers a kaleidoscopic programme of concerts and club nights, markets, circus, theatre, dance, exhibitions, workshops and activities for children, and a gigantic feast of global arts and cultures.

Other colourful events include the mela, a celebration of South Asia in the People's Park, Health & Harmony - Global Therapies Fair, Eastern Lights - Sky Lantern Event, Spoken Word performances and Salon Culture where you can indulge in therapies from around the globe, or there are educational workshops from Indian rangoli and kite making to Chinese lanterns and woodblock printing audiences at the Mela can also learn to bhangra and gidda dance, play the Indonesian gamelan, relax and have an Indian head massage or henna hand painting, saris or kimonos. Plus, a Bollywood disco, Nepalese nomads, the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan, and Dulsori. The Festival has India Tourist Board - Incredible India, as a sponsor of the 2009 Mela. Add to this exotic mix tribal belly dance, Japanese calligraphy, Chinese fan making, Indian stilt walkers, Japanese flower arranging, yoga and traditional Indian games and you will see why this day-long celebration of the artistic wealth of South Asia is a highlight of the Festival.
