Isle Of Wight Festival 2006 review

By Scott Williams | Published:

After unremarkable performances from Cathead and The Windows Delays take to the stage and draw in a sizeable crowd for their breezy sun shot tunes as the arena reaches baking temperatures.

Greg Gilbert always surprises me, because unless I’m actually looking at the stage I think they are led by a female vocalist, he has a very falsetto singing voice. However, before he starts to sing he asks if there is anyone in the crowd from Southampton apart from his family and his voice sounds normal.

After some rather lovely tunes from the new album ‘You See Colours’ which I’ll now get around to getting they dip into songs from ‘Faded Seaside Glamour’ the 2004 album which brought them to our attention and which they played last time they visited the island.

From the first notes of ‘Long Time Coming’ through new songs and on to ‘Wanderlust’ and ‘Nearer then Heaven’ the band are the perfect accompaniment to the heat and receive loud cheers. The set finishes with ‘Valentine’ and the music is spot on, guitars and sunshine is the perfect combination. Greg promises they’ll be back and I don’t doubt it, they may not be a huge band but these local boys sure can make you feel good.

Tunes from their last album sound good and I get the feeling if they can just ignite some interest in the chart buying public then Delays could see themselves back in an evening slot. Their well crafted music would be even nicer in the sunset.
