Babyshambles

Isle of Wight Festival 2005 review

By Scott Williams | Published:

No screens again at the beginning of his set. Okay I may be the only person in Britain who has not been following Pete Doherty and his latest band and I’ve not heard any of Babyshambles before and had low expectations, instead however I was pleasantly surprised.

There’s a sizeable crowd gathered to watch him and there’s a band of hardcore dancing and screaming fans down the front. He’s clearly more than slightly out of it and you get the feeling he’s not really all that bothered who he’s with as long as he’s onstage. The band produce a strong drum and bass beat that anything would sound good over. Pete mumbles, “Hey I know you.”

And then rather more together he tells us the next song is one he wrote last year whilst on the island with The Libertines, I think it was called “What can I do?” it’s slower and still delivers despite Pete stopping half way through for a drag on his fag. The crowd interaction continues on the same level with Pete mumbling “Yeah listen... yeah go on!” Kind of what I expected however over all the music was better than I thought it would be. I heard Kate Moss was there but never caught sight of her.
