Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club review

Isle of Wight Rock Festival 2004

By Scott Williams | Published:

Other festivals organisers who may be reading, note this is the warm up band for your stages - they’ll get the crowd warmed up as well as Jules Holland does and no doubt they’re a lot cheaper.

Personally I’d like to thank them for the suggestion that we turn to the stranger next to us and say hello. I spent a great Sunday chatting to the strangers next to me and it was a great idea, by the end they were strangers no more.

They have a jazz lounge lizard feel and loads of audience participation to get our brains and mouths functioning. The lyrics are fun and witty and there is a rather him than me moment when he clambers down to the crowd to sing directly into the face of a member of the crowd.

Jerry Fish & the Mudbug Club

Jerry is as smooth as Huey from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals and decked out as a Bryan Ferry type crooner. Slowly the smooth patter and singing becomes more frenetic as they go on. The three piece horn section really jazz it up. Slowly they add more ingredients bringing more instruments to the fore. Adding in more rhythm and a bluesy guitar. Spicy Mud plays his slap bass with style and of course more and more of us in the audience are joining in.
