This festival used to follow the V Music Festival that took place the preceding weekend. The Chelmsford Spectacular was a music and cultural festival which took place annually for around ten years over the August Bank Holiday Weekend in the landscaped setting of Hylands Park.
The festival narrowly survived some of the worst August weather on record in 2004, the following year Chelmsford Borough Council decided to replace the event with a new programme of events.
