eBay lose their bottle over Diana

will concerts and festivals now be promoted as tho they're about the dead?

By Neil Greenway | Published:

Following the rapid sell-out of the Concert For Diana that's happening at Wembley Stadium next July, as usual for a sellout, tickets appeared almost immediately for resale on eBay for stupid money.

However, BBC Online reports (here) that eBay says these ticket re-sales are being removed. They quote an eBay spokesman as saying "In view of the unique and commemorative nature of the Concert for Diana event and as a mark of respect for the memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, eBay has decided to not allow the re-sale of tickets to this event on the site."

This isn't the first time that eBay has removed tickets being touted via its website. Last year they removed Live8 tickets, but only after Bob Geldof had attacked the resale of those tickets as "sick profiteering", and asked people to boycott eBay. It seems that eBay will only back down if their corporate image is at serious risk.

Following today's statement by eBay, it now seems that promoters have - finally - the perfect way of stopping greedy eBay users and eBay from leeching off their events. It seems that eBay don't want to appear to be making money from the dead.

Then again, it could be that someone at eBay has high hopes of a knighthood one day, and so doesn't want to p*ss off those who are known by royalists as the royals.
