El Presidente

T in the Park 2006 reviews

By Scott Johnson | Published:

Is anyone else tiring of El Presidente’s disco glam-rock? To start with it was fuelled by funky riffs and catchy beats and had a nostalgic cheesiness that was treading the thin line between credible and downright irritating.

Now we’re seeing El Presidente’s third appearance at T in the Park in four years and the desirability of watching Dante and his crew march us through the same set list once more is definitely starting to wane.

Still, elevation to the main stage either means the band have finally made it, or that Scotland have awarded them the title of the nations new novelty band, ensuring they will fade into obscurity while ‘Rocket’ will probably become the soundtrack to Glaswegian karaoke nights out.

A moderate crowd has been drawn in for the band who churn out a rather abysmal incarnation of ‘100mph’. Not that it’s El Presidente’s fault – the sound is shocking and the feedback makes it all seem like it’s being forced through one of those dodgy 1980’s car stereos.

Regardless of the issues surrounding El Presidente’s shelf life the crowd seem to love it. However I’m inclined to believe that if you gave an Aberdeen angus 30 minutes of stage time where all it did was chew on some grass, the Scottish crowd would still go wild.

‘Without you’ and ‘Rocket’ rounded up the set, fairly predictably, encouraging the first crowd sing-a-long of the day. All in all it certainly wasn’t bad, Dante is clearly a great showman and El Presidente manage to pull off being a T-Rex cover band extremely well.
