Funeral for a Friend

T in the Park2004 review

By Guy Powell | Published:

Emo is a genre that’s very easy to do wrong. It’s also a genre that is done wrong far too often and only ever appealing to fans.

Forget all of that – Funeral for a Friend have reinvented emo. There’s no whining, no painful yelps and most importantly it didn’t sound as if everybody was playing different songs at the same time.

Balado is not the place for emo. The NME stage has attracted less people than it should with even the floor covering not even covered with people, but as the sound emanating from the stage continues more and more people flock to hear the soaring delights of FFAF.

Funeral For A Friend

With vocals that penetrate you to your core and riffs that seamlessly juxtapose between melodies and heavy thrashing – it’s as if the Welsh quintet of emo-stars have reinvented the stereotypical performance that one would expect from any emo band.

Already known as being at the forefront of their genre, they deserve to stay there and carry on rising through the ranks for a long time to come. If you thought you’d heard emo before – think again.
