Blackbud

Hyde Park Calling review

By Scott Williams | Published:

A large section of the crowd had gone off to watch the football, which is such a shame for the next act, Blackbud. The tent is criminally quiet for the trio, although there’s still a couple of hundred. ‘Heartbeat’ opens with the band incredibly tight and they sound even better than the last time I saw them. ‘Waiting for the Sun’ has lots of style and the band is really enjoying themselves. Sam’s drums, Adam’s bass and Jo’s guitar are really fluid and the crowd aren’t leaving in fact Blackbud are drawing in more people from the surrounding benches and pools of shade.

Their music is sweet and delicate at times, and a soothing balm in the heat and perfectly accompanied by the cooling breeze. Bass player Adam jumps down into the pit, well it’s not being used by photographers, and they’ve got quite a decent proportion of the crowd at the front up and dancing. Slowly Blackbud are emerging as a band with that special something, but they really need better fortune than competing with a World Cup match. They deserve to have packed crowds now, they’re now ready for bigger stages and larger crowds next summer. The world is opening up for them now and they’re confident, hugely talented and will be wowing crowds next summer.
