The Saw Doctors

Guilfest 2004 review

By Scott Williams | Published:

The line up has gone few a few changes and the Irish boys all look a little older except the one with the specs and the Ramones T-shirt I suspect back home there’s a picture of him looking a lot older. It was great to see the lads again and I noticed them hanging about their tour bus early on the Sunday morning having a laugh and a joke.

The Saw Doctors

Their tunes are catchy, funny and great to dance to, so I do! And I notice a plethora of other folks in Saw Doctors shirts also jigging about and there are lots of little kids in the audience having a dance too. Today in the sunshine they play a greatest hits set and it’s a delight. It’s an overblown Irish Pub session full of rousing tunes dripping in rock, ceili, country and even punky at times. Immediate and by the end of every song the crowd have the choruses down for a final singalong.

The Saw Doctors

It’s a classic sing along full of audience participation with a bag of big tunes thrown over your shoulder to swagger away from the main stage with. N17, Red Cortina, Useta Love Her, What A Day, Bless Me Father, Green and Red of Mayo, Joyce Country Ceil Band, That’s What She Said Last Night and loads more! My favourite being My Heart is Living in the 60s Still, when they sang, “I’ve been smoking joints, popping pills and now I’m feeling ill..” I felt far from ill, it was a true tonic and that’s what they are for me doctors to heal a worn soul.

The Saw Doctors

It was glorious and if you love the Saw Doctors and you missed it, you must be mad! I’m not even Irish but there is something in my Celtic blood which resonates to these tunes more than any other band. Maybe it’s because you can tell they are real tunes.
