Pulp

Guildford Live 2001 reviews

Pulp were the headlining act, and they certainly didn't disappoint the crowd. Jarvis Cocker came on stage to some rapturous applause and chants of 'Jarvis, Jarvis'. His rapport with the crowd was immediately evident as he chatted away seeming very relaxed. This chatter went on between songs as he removed his rather lovely brown (knitted by his mum I'm sure) jumper and noted that he was 'knackered' from jumping around which he hasn't done for a while.

The band opened with 'Common People' which got the crowd dancing and singing along. From here the excitement didn't stop as Pulp played more old tunes alongside new ones which the crowd danced, sang, shouted and screamed to. 'Help the Aged' was another particular favourite of the crowd and Jarvis put as much energy into these older hits as he did their new songs. The band sounded tight overall and really provided the kind of energy needed for the first night of a festival.

Pulp left the stage at 10.45pm, but returned for the last fifteen minutes to play an encore which kept the crowd happy. I always find this encore business a bit strange at festivals when we all know that they are due to finish at 11pm, it seems so false to go off and come back on again. In this instance though it bothered me less as Pulp gave such an enthusiastic performance they deserved a quick beer before returning to the stage and a very happy crowd who were eager to hear as much as they could of Pulp and see as much as they could of Jarvis.
