Eddie Reader

Guildford Live 2001 reviews

By Zoe | Published:

Having received some advice to go and see Eddie Reader I ran to the main stage on Sunday, child in tow to catch her and I'm really pleased that I did. Unfortunately we missed the very beginning of her set but have been reliably informed that much time was spent 'tuning up', so I happily missed little. When we arrived Reader was in full voice crooning away like nobody's business. The sun was shining, the crowd was chilled and the music was very relaxing - a perfect Sunday.

I don't know the names of the songs she sang or even the names of the two guitarists that accompanied her, but I do know that it all sounded wonderful. The acoustic guitars were played with great skill and the perfection that is Eddie Reader's voice meant that we were gently lifted to a better place. The festival programme refers to Reader's live performances as 'emotional' and this one was no different. When it was time for the three of them to come off stage it felt as if they had only just warmed up. I'm sure that they could have played and played, but Reader assured the audience that they would play 'out there' later (i.e. elsewhere in the festival). I wonder if this really happened. Guildford Live isn't big like Glastonbury Festival where a band can turn up in a dark corner and play an intimate acoustic set. Did anyone see Eddie Reader on site elsewhere or hear her beautiful lilting voice? If so, please let us know, we'd love to hear all about it.
