The long-rumoured Live 8 concert has been announced, to happen in London's Hyde Park on Saturday July 2nd. The show will publicise the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign, rather than raise cash. The situation in Africa is now worse than it was 20 years ago - raising cash isn't enough: the world needs to trade fairly, and can start by cancelling third world debts. The concert aims to put pressure on the world leaders at the G8 summit at Gleneagles in Scotland from 6 to 8 July.

Acts include Madonna, Coldplay, Elton John, Muse, REM, Dido, Paul McCartney, Razorlight, and Keane. Click here for the full details.

Simultaneous concerts will also happen in Berlin, Paris, Rome, and Philidelphia, and the whole event is expected to be watched by 2 billion people. Let's hope they pay attention to the issue, as well as the bands.

Applications for tickets will be via a text message lottery, as we revealed earlier today. Tickets are free, and people can apply - as many times as they like - from 8am Monday 6th June, with the lines staying open for 7 days. There's 75,000 pairs of tickets, and the winners will be randomly chosen by computer. The number to text will be announced at 8am on Monday 6th June via all UK Radio Stations and BBC Television, with no applications accepted before 8am.

eFestivals has been proud to support MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY since its launch at the beginning of the year. We fully believe in this cause, and aren't jumping on any bandwagon.
