Morcheeba (1)
Jazzworld Stage
23:10 24th June 2000

Headline slot on Saturday night at Glasto. There were plenty of festival goers who had left Travis, Fat Boy Slim and Leftfield in order to soak up the mellow vibes of Morcheeba on the Jazz Stage. More than Skye might have thought judging by her delight (and bearing in mind that this was their first major gig for 18 months).

They launched straight into Friction, which had the audience swaying and singing along in no time. The beautiful voice of Skye melting over the audience and the classic dreamy sound complemented by strings and horns and a range of old Morcheeba style sliding guitars to the new more stax style prevalent in the new material was not at all disappointing.

Next was Totally and Blindfold before mixing some tracks from the new album, Fragments of Freedom, with old favourites like Part of the process, Who Can You Trust, Just Be Yourself and Trigger Hippy before reappearing for The Sea and the soon-to-be-released new track You & Me as an encore.

Skye and crew were clearly enjoying themselves and so were the audience. There were some comments that the set was too downbeat but the reception suggested that the mood was just perfect for such a polished performance by a great band. After all if you can't have a chilled out boogie on the jazz stage late on a Saturday night something would be wrong. It wasn't.
