The Higher Ground Festival is a new music and film festival taking place in venues around Bournemouth from Monday 13th until Saturday 18th March. There's live music and film, with live funk, hip-hop and nu-jazz performances by artists from across the UK. To complement the live music, there will be a programme of short film and music video screenings.

Monday 13 March, 1812, Exeter Road, Bournemouth. Performances by five-piece nu-jazz and funk band G13 and The Syndicate, mixing up funk, jazz and Latin vibes featuring the Dark Science MCs.

Tuesday 14 March, Bar So, Exeter Road. A screening of material from the international film label Future Shorts, who are compiling a special programme of short music videos and music inspired short films. Future Shorts provides a platform for filmmakers from across Europe and will be creating a mix of film from up and coming directors and more recognisable work. Also expect interactive multi-media installations around the venue.

Wednesday 15 March, Consortium, The Square, Bournemouth. A night of live hip-hop. Headlining the night will be the nine-piece jazzed up live hip-hop band Lazy Habits featuring MCs. Also on the bill is 2005’s UK DMC 2nd place champion, the scratch DJ and turntablist DJ X-Rated. In support will be human beatboxer virtuoso Luke E Mac with an entourage of DJs and MCs presenting material from his new project The Inanimate Object.

Thursday 16 March, K-Bar, Exeter Road, Bournemouth. A screening of the documentary Dig!, a feature-length documentary shot over seven years about musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of the Dandy Warhols. Dig! Charts the turbulent progress through the music industry of these star crossed friends and bitter rivals. The documentary has been a major international success winning best documentary at the 2004 Sundance film festival.

The Festival concludes on Saturday 18 March at Consortium, The Square, Bournemouth with festival legends Dreadzone. The band have been recording and touring around the world for over ten years with their own brand of dub-inspired breakbeat and electronica. Following on from headlining the dance tent at Glastonbury Festival in 2005 the band will be hitting the road again this year, calling into Bournemouth for a full live set to round up an exciting week of live music and film. Support comes from breaks DJs Crafty Rascals, dub and reggae from the Unification Sound System and live support from live breakbeat and hip-hop band Decker Gives Chase. To buy tickets, click >here.
