Manchester International Festival takes place at venues all over the city and draws on the city's role in music, with the programme usually focusing particularly on new music. The festival also has concerts premiered during the event by established and emerging international musicians. The festival runs from Thursday 30th June until Sunday 17th July 2011.

Bjork, Snoop Dogg, Doctor Dee (Damon Albarn & Rufus Norris), Amadou & Mariam, Sinéad O'Connor, Rickie Lee Jones, WU LYF, Mark Andre, Johnny Vegas, Paul Heaton, Candi Staton, Mor Karbasi, Dya Singh, Anuradha Paudwal, Qari Syed Sadaqat Ali, Bernard Sumner, Egyptian Hip Hop, XXXY, Plank!, LoneLady, Silverclub, Air Cav, D/R/U/G/S, Young British Artists, Golden Glow, Alina Ibragimova. The Quay Brothers, BBC Philharmonic, CBeebies, Cornershop and Rude, Inne Goris with Dominique Pauwels and Ruimtevaarders, Oily Cart, Nik Ramage, Jake Rodrigues, Scottish Opera, JoNny and Stephen Stockbridge, TPO Company, and ZingZillas. Other events include 'The Life and Death of Marina Abramović' with Robert Wilson + Marina Abramović + Antony + Willem Dafoe, That Day We Sang with Victoria Wood , and 'Wagner: Die Walküre'.

Many of the Festival's productions and events often premiere in the city before touring to other international destinations, such as Paris, New York and Berlin.
