Newton Faulkner joins Bristol Folk Festival

with a show at Bristol's O2 Academy

Bristol Folk Festival takes a new direction today, announcing singer songwriter Newton Faulkner at the city's O2 Academy for their May Day Bank Holiday event.

The festival has previously staged all its events at the Colston Hall. But a new strand added this year will see the Colston programme augmented with events at the O2 Academy, with Faulkner as the flagship act on Saturday, 5th May. Faulkner will be supported by acts including singer-songwriter Jake Morley.

Bristol Folk Festival is this year being co-organised by the new Bristol Music Trust and local music promoter, Jan Ayers. Jan said, "We are delighted to be presenting an artist of Newton's calibre as part of the 2012 festival and broadening the event's platforms to include the Academy."

As well as up to 40 acts, the festival will feature Morris dancers, mummers and maypoles, ceilidhs,and singalong sessions. The headliners are Show of Hands on Saturday, Cara Dillon on Sunday, and supergroup Afro Celt Sound System on Monday in what is likely to be the band's only UK summer festival appearance this year. Also confirmed are Karine Polwart, Rua Macmillan, Phil Bassindale, 3 Daft Monkeys, Scoville Units, Lady Maisery, Will Pound, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, The Young'Uns, Lucy Ward, ahab, & Blair Dunlop. Festivalgoers can be guaranteed no wet weather problems as the whole event will take place on two stages in the city's Colston Hall running from Saturday 5th May until Monday 7th May 2012.

Weekend tickets are also on sale priced at £80 for the three days (concessions £70). Family tickets are priced at £200 (2 adults and two children aged 5-15) and under 5s go free. Day tickets are priced at £30 for Saturday, £35 for Sunday, and £40 for Monday with a £2 concession offered for children aged 5-15 years, students, pensioners, disabled and unwaged.

Those wanting to camp for the festival will be able to stay a minutes walk from the venue at St Mary-on-the-Quay church. The church in Colston Street will welcome campers to its hall for just £12 a night (under 15s must be accompanied by a responsible adult and are full price but under 5s go free.)
