Reading and Leeds festivals organiser Melvin Benn, who has banned festival goers from taking flags to this weekend's Reading and Leeds festivals, has revealed, to the BBC (here) that he has been talking to Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis about introducing a ban at next year's Glastonbury Festival.

This weekend at the Reading and Leeds events flags will be confiscated at the arena gates. Benn, who also helps organise Glastonbury Festival, says that flags are 'a nightmare' because they block the view for many fans. He is quoted as saying, "I'm doing everything I can to ban flags this year. For some reason those that buy a flag want to be closest to the stage."

Dozens of flags greeted big acts at Glastonbury this year, with fans complaining about the view during Bruce Springsteen's headline set in particular. "You couldn't see the acts," Mr Benn explains. "The flags were everywhere. There have always been flags but not to the level that there has been. And the flags have become very long and tall."

There is no confirmation that a ban on flags will be in place at next year's event. eFestivals will bring you more news on the situation once it becomes available.
