The Verve's frontman Richard Ashcroft has told xFM (here) that he'd like the band to headline Glastonbury next year.

The recently reformed band - with their original classic line up of Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury - are hoping to release a new album before next summer. When asked if The Verve will be headlining Glastonbury next year, Ashcroft replied:-
"I think it would be a travesty if we didn’t. Because I think what’s missing from a lot of the headliners is we’re one of the few bands that can jam without sounding like Lynyrd Skynyrd on a bad night, so we can actually take people on a proper journey, rock n roll wise.

I think that’s what’s great
", he continued. "If you can do that on the big stage the big tunes can get 60,000 people singing, but you’ve also got the capacity to change a standard rock gig into something else. I suppose that’s what's been exciting about playing and we’ll be excited about playing then."
Details of how tickets will be sold for Glastonbury Festival 2008 are expected to be announced early in the new year - we'll of course have the details for you when they're available. The Festival is also planning on running its Emerging Performers Competition again for up and coming bands, with the details of thios expected to be announced soon.

Next year's Glastonbury Festival will take place from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th June, with the site open to early arrivals from Wednesday 25th June.
