Muse

T in the Park2004 review

Wednesday 14th July 2004

Fresh from what was universally described as one of the defining performances of their careers at Glastonbury 2004, the fact that Dom’s father passed away on the same night left a shadow over the band and expectations of tonight’s performance. Luckily, Muse decided they could play and appear on stage.

Sadly, a lot of people seem to dismiss Muse immediately to see The Darkness who are now headlining the main stage with Justin clad in a cat suit that is reportedly worth over £20,000. No such antics at Muse – just good old FX and guitars.

Fans need not worry about whether or not Muse are going to perform as from the onset the 3-piece fill the stage like no other, running through their FX-fuelled, overdriven riffs that provide their unique sound.

There is little crowd interaction but Matt, Chris & Dom are listening in their own way and respond musically to the crowd even if it’s not with words. It’s hard to explain how you know that they care about the crowd but you just get a feeling that they really do.

As the encore ends, the trademarked confetti erupts from the stage leaving what can only be described as a cleanup nightmare – that and a lot of very fulfilled fans. At the same time fireworks launch from the main stage, and following an encore (yes! an encore at T!), the first night of T in the Park 2004 comes to a close.

Love them or hate them, there’s no doubt that Muse are leaders of a genre of one. The depth of sound produced cannot be matched by any other 3-piece. It cannot even be matched by any other band full stop. Make sure that you get a chance to see them live to experience a show like few others.
