Radio 1 reveals free Big Weekend in Londonderry

BBC Radio 1 have announced that their 10th annual free Big Weekend will take place in Ebrington Square, Londonderry, in Northern Ireland last visited in 2004. This year the free festival will now take place over three days this year from Friday 24th until Sunday 26th May 2013.

This event is run in a different location within the United Kingdom each time. It is the biggest free live music event in the UK and always includes a host of new artists.

Olly Murs, and Two Door Cinema Club are the first artists confirmed to perform. It will be located in the city centre with two main stages of live music. The first day will focus on dance music and Radio 1Xtra.

Tickets will be free and are obtained through a lottery. There is no charge for the concert itself, but a handling fee per ticket will be applied to help cover all associated ticket handling costs. The majority of the tickets for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend 2013 are being allocated to people living in Londonderry and the surrounding boroughs. Registration is not yet open.

Ticket details will be announced in the coming months.

Jason Carter, the BBC's Head of Live Music and Events, Popular Music, said, "The last Big Weekend in the city in 2004 was a legendary music moment in Northern Ireland, and it’s so great to be able to return with an even bigger show second time around. The concerts will be almost twice the capacity of the previous visit, and for the very first time, the event will run across three days. I have no doubt it will be a spectacular weekend of music in the heart of the city."
