PRESS RELEASE for immediate release

Indie / Rock Day at the Essential Festival Bristol 2002

In the immediate run up to the Essential Festival over the May Bank Holiday weekend, we experienced difficulties on site due to severe weather conditions, and as such concerns were raised over the safety of some stages especially for a rock audience.

However, it is true to say that the advance ticket sales for the Indie Rock day were not as strong as those for the Dance and Roots days, and when taking into account the FA Cup Final in Cardiff and the Badminton Horse trials, the sheer impracticality of getting to Bristol on the Sunday was a major factor in determining whether these slow sales might pick up.

In view of the likely low attendance alongside the ground problems, Essential decided that the only sensible thing to do would be to cut a couple of stages and began the process by ringing agents to determine whether any of their acts would voluntarily pull out of the event or allow changes to terms of contract. In the main, these agents were understanding and obliging and helped with the process of narrowing down the bill - however the agent responsible for Reef and Therapy? was not as cooperative and immediately withdrew the acts from the bill.

Essential would like to sincerely apologise for the non appearance of these bands on the bill and would like to urge any unhappy ticket holders to get in touch via emailing info@essentialents.com.

Despite the difficulties on the Sunday, the event was a great success with the Dance and Roots Days selling out and with the weather holding out for the duration of the weekend, it was a fantastic event - hopefully one that will be able to return to Bristol for the foreseeable future.

We would like to stress again our apologies for the alterations on the bill at such a late stage, but these were forced upon us and we will be making our best endeavours to make up for it to the minority of disgruntled customers.
