No matter what your politics were he set out the economic realities that we would face, the glaring omissions and inaccuracies of the snp fiscal plans rather that the flag waving, rhetoric and soundbites Salmond was coming out with.  
Not a politician who fits in with the modern media friendly style we expect now. He made mistakes like not being more vocal in opposing Blair over Iraq but a lot better than most of the shallow publicity seeking individuals we now see in Westminster.
