When does Chai Wallahs usually get announced? Are there any regulars that are likely to be on there?

Last year it was only a couple of weeks before the festival. In 2019 it was July, so probably still a while for that.

I wonder if the next line up announcement will the comedy and spoken word one? Or Cinedrome?

I’ve seen from Twitter than newly announced John Mouse is bringing his “electronic” set to GM and playing songs from The Goat.  This is a pretty interesting album…I’m not sure whether I like it yet or not!  It’s very synth heavy. Quite like Lynks in some respects and kind of reminds me of some of Jerksin Fendrix’s stuff.

Also, anyone seen or a fan of Robocorba Quartet?  I think they might be really good.  They seem to have been around for a while but they’ve got a new album out this summer and they’ve released 4 new songs from that already.  They all sound great to me. I particularly like the latest one - “Wellness”.   I also really like a couple of their old songs, “Correct” and “You’ll Wade”.   They remind me a bit of Squid but quite a lot more jazzy (although I’m not sure if that’s just because the singer is the drummer!).  Worth checking out if you’re into jazz-rock.

Sat: Bicep, Arab Strap, Arooj Aftab, Torres, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Willie J Healey, Cola

Jenny Hval into Low would be pretty good. Jenny Hval was really enjoyable when I saw her a month or so ago. Maybe not as WOW as when I saw her in the past but still very good.

Looking forward to seeing Low again later this week.

Ahh nice. Meant to ask how the Jenny Hval gig was. Glad it was good. Have been listening to Classic Objects non stop. Can’t wait to see her for the first time!

My top 5 must-sees:

Ichiko Aoba - IMO one of the most spellbinding musicians of our times. Really hoping she brings a full band with her like she had at Fuji Rock Festival so we can hear fully orchestrated versions of the songs from Windswept Adan, though a solo set is obviously much more likely.

Orchestra Baobab - I have become obsessed with Pirate's Choice over the past couple of years, so they've quickly become a bucket list band for me. Utrus Horas is one of those songs that feels almost transcendental as it reaches its climax.

Michael Kiwanuka - One of those rare artists who gets stronger and stronger with each release. The S/T is a modern soul classic.

Minyo Crusaders - A ridiculously fun and catchy fusion of Japanese minyo folk song and a whole boat load of latin genres (boogaloo, cumbia, afro-latin jazz etc). Fantastic live band as well.

Low - I was struggling to get into their newer glitchy/experimental sound until I saw them at EOTR 2019 where they delivered a jaw-droppingly amazing show, possibly even in my all time top 5 favourite festival sets. Now I can't get enough of Double Negative and HEY WHAT and can't wait for my first time hearing them play songs from the latter.

Would like to see Low at GM but i'm already seeing them this saturday so I suppose it depends on whether theyre going to switch things up much for a festival set.

Kae Tempest subbing Kraftwerk sounds a bit dull tbh

Kae is great live. Quite banging. They'll know how to do a pre-Kraftwerk set.

Really? I'll have to see for myself but for some reason i'm imagining their sets to be quite slow, with an audience full of the Crossed-Arms Brigade nodding along and thinking "wow this is so profound"

They may do a bit but if they follow the pattern of the Double Negative tour then it's quite similar.

Thing is though, it's Low. Seeing them tomorrow in Brighton for about the 12th time and I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Probably the only clash of any other band that would even make me vaguely consider missing them would be OSees and they aren't playing so I don't have to worry.

Jenny Hval and Ichiko Aoba are my two genuine must see at all costs acts.  If they clash, there will be hell to pay.  I’m a bit worried about where Ichiko Aoba is going to play tbh.  She’s pretty high up the poster but I can’t see her anywhere other than the Walled Garden, which suggests she might be headlining it.  Best case scenario for me is if she headlines one evening when MK and Bicep are headlining other stages.

I then have a list of acts I’m very much hoping to see: Beach House, Low, Cassandra Jenkins, Alex G, Arooj Aftab, Mdou Moctar, Kelly Forsyth, WITCH, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul, Cate Le Bon, Deathcrash, Indigo Da Souza, TORRES, Nathan Fake and Sofia Kourtesis.  Highly likely that some of these will clash sadly.

Following this, there is a longer list of acts which I like and will see subject to them clashing with any of the above: Kraftwerk, Kae Tempest, KEG, Annie Hart, Minyo Crusaders, Yves Tumour, Katy J Pearson, Mandrake Handshake, Arab Strap, Bicep, Carwyn Ellis, English Teacher, Parquet Courts, Lemondaze, Donny Benet, Orchestra Baobab, Balimaya Project, Valerie June, Mary Lattimore, Unschooling, Robocobra Quartet, John Francis Flynn, Buffalo Nichols, Lucy Gooch, The Umlauts, Ural Thomas, Tara Clerkin Trio and Bingo Fury.

Ichiko's an odd one, because she's very well known in certain corners of the Internet. For example, on RateYourMusic her most recent album has almost 10,000 votes and is rated the second best album of 2020 behind only The Microphones in 2020. However, I'm also willing to wager that the vast majority of GM festivalgoers hadn't heard of her before she was announced.

Agreed. It's a tricky booking. Whoever goes to see her will absolutely love it because she's brilliant, irresistibly charming and sweet, but if they schedule her in the wrong place the audience could be quite small.

Slightly off topic, but thought I would ask in here as I am sure people are monitoring Fanticks for GM tickets.

Does anyone know why are so many people selling tickets to Beat Herder? The odd set of GM tickets pop up every few days, but there are multiple loads of Beat Herder ones being listed everyday an have been for weeks on end.

Very hard to be excited about Black Country, New Road when their music sounds fantastic on Spotify but they've said they won't be performing any of it now the lead singer has quit. Just makes me wish I'd seen them before his departure.

It’s certainly disappointing that we won’t hear that material.  At the same time, I respect his decision and I’m excited to see where they go next.  Hopefully they release something prior to August.  We’ll get a good indication of what to expect in any event as they’ve got quite a few shows/festivals prior to GM.

I really enjoyed BCNR at EOTR last year. Was my 7th time seeing them and the set had lots of stuff from the new album. The Place Where He Inserted The Blade was stunning. I'm sure there new stuff will be good though. Looking forward to seeing them in a few weeks.

Low last night were very good. A very different setlist to when I saw them a few times on the Double Negative tour so that was good.

Let us know how that BCNR gig goes please!  I’m glad I managed to see them play Basketball Shoes a few times and then Good Will Hunting and The Place Where He Inserted The Blade once each but I think I would have appreciated the latter two much more now having listened to the album.
