Green Man 2022

Looking forward to this, which will be my first Greenman.

Apologies if this is a stupid question or answered elsewhere, but in previous years do the main stage and far out headliners play at the same time for similar length sets? So is it possible to see a decent chunk of both or are you better picking one based on set times/distances between stages?

Broadly speaking, they usually play at pretty similar times so tends to be a choice between one or the other - particularly if you’re keen to be near the front.  FO headliners do usually have a bit less time (75 mins vs. 90 mins) so it is possible to see a bit of both.

On occasion, they schedule it so that you can see most of both.  In 2018, I saw all of Teenage Fanclub and then all but one song of Fleet Foxes, for example.  I also saw all of King Gizzard and then at least half of Mount Kimbie.

Great, thank you.

Regarding distances, I reckon on a good day, it's only a 5-10 minute walk between FO and Mountain

Aye not to far from stage to stage at all. Last year I watched a bit of Fontaines, a bit of Teenage Fanclub and then a bit of Gwenno. Although this was the Sunday headliner so probably not much traffic between stages. I had wrestless legs after such a high energy Self Esteem performance.

Yeah, they're all really close. Unless it's someone you really want to be at the front for, you generally don't really have to worry about one act finishing at the same time as another begins.

If you time it right, moving to the back (ideally back left) during the last song, and leg it you can get between Far Out / Mountain (or at least the area where you can clearly hear that stage from) within a couple of minutes. It's a 5-6 minute walk. The only place you might get caught up is near the toilets/food sellers/courtyard entrance area, especially if it's muddy.

Walled Garden is a little trickier if you're in a hurry due to the paths in/out of that way often being narrow and a bit congested at busy times, but distance-wise is actually closer to either FO/M than they are to each other. There is a path around the back, which is convenient if coming from Rising, the left side of Mountain or if the main paths are super-busy or muddy. That sometimes gets you in fairly close on the left, if there's a scrum further back. Getting out of the WG can be busy for the same reasons, so is the stage I'd be most likely to leave a song early from if I'm keen to get elsewhere.

GM Rising is very close to Mountain and stage times are perfectly staggered. Get to the far left of the main stage during the last song and then it's a 90 second walk. Sometimes you can cut around the right of the pond, depending on stage placement relative to the bushes/trees and any paths through them, to get close in to Rising where there is often more space than people realise.

Chai Wallahs is similarly close to FO as Rising is to Mountain. Again, back left of FO allows for the best exit.

That Friday evening looks tasty! Mdou Moctar -> WITCH -> Jenny Hval -> A bit of Cassandra Jenkins -> Low

Not too many clashes on there for me either - can you please send this to the organisers and save them a job? 😄

Yes Friday is my favourite as well!  But terrible clashes with Cate Le Bon, Kelly Forsyth and Beach House as well!!  Obviously it’s going to look totally different but it’s still working me up!

Alex g and Ezra clashing would be gutting, makes sense though as they're very different.

My guess is that Ezra is on the Sunday because they have a show in the US on the Wednesday before GM and a show in Scotland on the Tuesday following the festival.  So i would think Sunday would be ideal.  I believe Ezra played FO last time they were at GM so that’s why I put them on the main stage for this year. I think Alex G will be high up on the FO stage - either Saturday or Sunday.

Only 101 days until the Settlers opens, there's a rush to post photos of the programme on here and Will furiously types out the confirmed clashfinder.

I'd take his current version although I really want Parquet Courts to headline Far Out rather than be on the Mountain Stage.

Thursday has Honeyglaze, then Mandrake Handshake. Pip Blom are also playing on Thursday.

Just seen Mandrake Handshake play live. They are the absolute perfect festival band and will go down so well. I highly recommend everyone goes to see them.

Ahh good intel, thanks!  Do you know that Mandrake Handshake are on after Honeyglaze or just a guess??

Really looking forward to Mandrake Handshake. Listened to them a lot last year as they were at Wide Awake but think they must have clashed with someone as managed to miss them.

The chat went "we're playing Thursday on the second biggest stage after Honeyglaze".

I presume that is Far Out, although complicated by the fact that's not the second biggest stage on the Thursday?

The guy I spoke to seemed very excited when I told him the main stage isn't open on the Thursday so they should have a massive crowd.

Yes that is frustratingly complicated haha.  My guess would be Far Out as well.  Honeyglaze played Walled Garden last right? So I think they would be bumped up to Far Out, maybe first or second on?  With Mandrake Handshake to follow.

Is anyone else heading down to Brighton for The Great Escape next weekend?

Just going through TGE line-up and I think there are 8 already announced GM acts on the bill:

Honeyglaze, Katy J Pearson, Keg, English Teacher, Lime Garden, Joe & The Shitboys, Porij, and Unschooling.

Mainly reasonably known acts at this point, but the final 5 there have escaped me live so far and I'll be trying to see them. Unschooling (French post-punk band - often likened to Crack Cloud) seem to be everywhere this summer and really jump out at me on record, so am very excited about seeing them live.

Presumably there'll be a few more additions to Rising from the other acts at TGE too.

I agree Honeyglaze would be great quite early on Far Out.

I think the first slot though have generally been acts with a WTF element to them - International Teachers of Pop, audiobooks, Wet Leg? Perhaps Melyn Melin (or Mermaid Chunky if they're added?!) would fit that?

edit: just seen that my memory was playing tricks and audiobooks were second on in 2019!

Not much I want to see but I'll be there. Hoping to catch L'objectif, Audiobooks, Yama Warashi, Hatis Noit, Keg, Wu Lu, Grace Cummings, Powerplant and Blackhaine

Not listened to unschooling but see they're playing before Regressive Left and PVA on the Saturday so will probably watch them.

I saw proji a few months ago and thought they were absolute rubbish.

I would be if the venues allowed entry to under 18's. I go to most gigs with my son who is 16 and some places have strict age policies. I had a frustrating conversation with one in Brighton who advertise that they are "inclusive to all". Turns out they are, apart from when I asked if I could take my son.

I know it's council licensing rules, but imagine you live in Brighton, are 16/17 and massively into music but can't go to any gigs.

Other 18+ venues such as Boiler Rooms in Guildford seem a bit more accommodating and allow him in with a wristband. It's not like he even wants to drink alcohol anyway!

L'objectif and Powerplant on my hitlist too. Going to almost exclusively focus on acts I've not seen, so unlikely to get to Keg, PVA etc. this time. Still very tricky to plan a day though isn't it, with 39 stages!!

Wow, that's incredibly frustrating. I'd be livid!

My money was on KEG before they confirmed they were on Sunday.  Melyn Melin is a good shout.  Could also see Umlauts, English Teacher or Papur Wal doing it.

I think Unschooling are pretty good.  NYE is excellent I think.  Interested to hear your thoughts on them live.  There was a French post-punk (sort of) band announced for the 2020 line up called Corridor that I really like and was disappointed not to see them added for this year - hopefully next year!
