Javid's piece is almost certainly confirmation that they're going to ride this out without any more restrictions.

I wouldn't like to be an NHS worker reading it, but personally I'm happy that there's not going to be the looming shadow of a lockdown this month.

Agree. We are in a strange position whereby we now have no choice but to ride it out given the massive mixing over the last couple of weeks

My brother in law is a nurse at a North West hospital and thinks they will be fine.  In fact a lot of NHS workers aren't walking around exhausted and shitting themselves quite like often said in the media.

As my bro says -  he can only work at 100% - which he does every winter anyway...

I’ve got a handful of pals who work in the NHS and my mum is a nurse. They all say they’re knackered and worried. Staff shortages are a big issue.

I guess they’d be considered bedwetters?

Probably - they can only do a days shift and then hand over the reigns to the next shift.  Its like this every winter.

My mums shift was due to finish at 3pm the other day. She got out at 6pm. If she’d walked out at 3pm patients would have gone without care.

Not enough staff. There were supposed to be 5 senior nurses on duty. There were 2 and less capacity due to the additional Covid precautions.

Not an every winter thing. Definitely a Covid winter thing.

I know that doesn’t fit the “everything is fine what is everyone complaining about” narrative. Glad your brother in law has it easier.

People are basically having covid parties now (like the chicken pox parties with the kids), by socialising with it being so rife. It’s now inevitable you’re going to get it in the next few months - unless you lock yourself indoors. Say may as well do it in this awful first week of the new year!

Its entirely normal for people to do extra hours in the winter.  Nothing to do with a covid winter thing.  Your being sold a bunch of bollocks if you are being told otherwise.

Its not just my brother in law who works in the NHS, my fathers, mother, two cousins and my aunty all work in the NHS.  All having similar experiences.  Its tough but none of them are moaning or saying its much different than normal.

My brother in law is having just the same as anyone else.  He doesn't tend to over state stuff that is all.

There is defo an air of this issues being over stated and over played to suit a narrative not under played.

Let's be honest - just like all the "essential workers" who wanted to feel special everyone wants to act like they are all heros right now for just doing their jobs.

You  know literally nothing about where  she works or her job but also somehow seem to know everything!

Please thank the fam for giving us the scoop on all doctors and nurses from throughout the UK 😂

Eh yes there are.

You have to wear a face covering in shops and public transport.

Covid passes are needed for nightclubs, gigs, sports fixtures etc

Working from home guidance is in place.

All of this is in addition to one of the fastest booster vaccine rollouts in the world, the rollout of covid antivirals to older and more vulnerable adults, freely available lateral flow testing and clear guidance to take a test before meeting people indoors, and strict 10 day isolation for unvaccinated contacts of positive cases and unvaccinated people entering the country.

The idea that the government is doing nothing is a made up soundbite.

Add onto this

Legally enforceable self-isolation if you test positive

Self isolation for close contacts of positive cases for those who aren't vaccinated

Having to do a PCR test before arrival and on day 2 when entering the country.

Pick any one of those restrictions on liberty and show it to someone in 2019 and they'd think you were making it up. We shouldn't forget the significant restrictions on liberty that we have.

I work in the NHS and have done for 18 years, I don’t feel this winter is any different to other years really. It ain’t fun, but it never is at this time of year. Isolation is a major issue which I don’t have an answer to how we tackle this, other than calling a day to track and trace and start treating Covid like any other virus. Not sure we are at that stage at the moment, but by April if Omicron continues the same way I think (hope) it does we will be at that stage.

Life really has to move on and we start getting our head around the backlog and the inevitable crisis within mental health where I work currently work (but am duel trained so still do general nursing shifts). The last 2 years has seriously had a detrimental on the emotional wellbeing of the public.

Staff are tired and burnout will be a major issue the longer this goes on, I’m expecting a real tough few years, so have started working on emotional resilience and wellbeing to try and make work bearable for my colleagues. It’s only a small thing, but it’s putting those small things together which help us through

Our favourite covid expert speaks very highly of them....

Silence those who question is the first rule in the book of trying to cover something up isn’t it…?

But the convenient truth is that it hopped species so we’ll just go with that shall we 🤦‍♂️

Given the doctors age and risk profile the chances of him dying of covid would of been less than 0.1%. You do wonder if he died with a positive covid result in the last 28 days oh and a bullet in his temple.

Covid is making no difference to hospital care. It's just a normal winter. Nothing to see here.

A critical incident has been declared at several hospitals in Lincolnshire after the increased spread of Covid-19 caused "extreme and unprecedented" staff shortages.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust told its sites that it is "unable to maintain safe staffing levels", leading to "compromised care" at the heath care centres it covers.

They've almost certainly decided not to put in any more restrictions but this endless "we're considering and reviewing it" angle that keeps it constantly in the papers makes them look like they're being proactive about it and gives all the journos something to feed on. It's a smart way to pretend they're not just going to ride it out.

Yeah I can't see them changing tacks now.

nothing outdoors should be banned ever again due to covid, dear lord are we really still discussing this in nearly 2022. People have totally lost the plot with this thing.

Sturgeon has essentially banned crowds from football up here and it isn’t scientific reasons it’s cause she totally despises the sport and fans

good to see her indy campaigning is going well, is she still pretending she won't have to cut public spending like a tory if Scotland goes indy. There's  worse things for Scotland than a tory, such as ignorant nationalism.

Completely anecdotal but I don’t think the reduced isolation requirements are going to help very much with the staffing issues. I know 3 people who had covid over Xmas. All were double vaccinated or boosted and in their mid 20s / early 30s and all were still testing positive on LFTs at day 9/10 despite being asymptomatic at that point.

I must say I am a bit pissed off with the government keep saying there is no need for further restrictions while brining in further restrictions.  Forcing my kid and wife to wear a mask all day in School is a fucking restriction 😞

Sooner we bin mass testing and muzzles the better
