But still performing better than the others as stats show.  If Kane went through a barren period presumably he’d be dropped too…. Or Sterling as he’s been firing, or trippier who was suspended for 10 games.

Great point though

The players you mention have all performed in an England shirt before so have earnt a little leeway. Has TAA ever played well for England? It’s not like we don’t have a dozen other right backs who have been playing well.

You build a team around your best players, surely it’s that simple?!

It’ll all change anyway, they’ll beat Czech Republic and everyone will think they can win it and the press will hail Southgate for turning it around

I'm so confused about O'Donnell. Against the Czechs he looked like a random guy from the pub that had won a competition to get to play. Completely out of his depth. Against England he looked ok. Not sure what his true level is. And did we just play better against England as we were more up for it or are the Czechs just the best team in the group?

So confused. Only thing I feel certain of is that Scotland will fail to go through by the narrowest margin possible as is tradition.

On the bus home right now… genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse game of football in person.

I've seen worse but this game feels like it would've been at home alongside any number of times where big six games would be preceded by endless hype but end up 0-0 with few chances. Think you said in another thread it was your first in-person game in over a year so I'm guessing that anticipation ended up setting up disappointment in evening entertainment.

In a way, in assessing the match, it feels like it would've been fitting if that ridiculous scramble in the Scotland six yard box at the end had ended up with the ball over the line.

It's natural that had the Stones header gone in rather than being diverted onto the post by Uri Geller (seems like the type of thing he'd try and take credit for, anyway), it would've been a different game. In a way, it was similar to the Croatia game but England weren't able to push on in a way they did against the Croats and Scotland just read England's attacks too well.

Still, the convoluted and ridiculous format means England have basically qualified for the last 16.

Just coming back from the pub. Worst game of football I’ve ever watched. Boris as hell. Especially in a pub.

you know it’s boring when the tables full of lads with England shirts are just talking amongst themselves.

Tbf I found doing that better than watching the utter farce that was Iceland 2016.

For those who observe what coaches do when they mistakenly think no one is watching them

 Q.  ”why do you insist on scratching your arse and sniffing your fingers?

If we're being honest, haven't we all done that occasionally? We just haven't been caught doing it on live television! 😄

You obviously haven't spent 10 years of Sunday mornings stood at the side of your sons football matches!

To me does look like his at the piano and they are dueting.  Not sure which song, but hoping it is a love song

On the whole format thing, why not just include 32 teams. They wouldn’t be playing any more games than they are plus with the spread over different countries there’s not as much pressure on a single nation to host all the games.

Would be the same size as the World Cup currently is (though FIFA is expanding that to it's own ridiculously overstuffed format from 2026).

I feel like it would be a bit much given that's two thirds of the members of UEFA getting to go through, but having said that, I imagine it will be expanded to that size before long tbf, given clearly football administrators don't know when to stop.

“Playing for an easier draw” could easily land us Spain next.

Feels like England might not do that badly against them given how incoherent Spain are looking right now.
