Glastonbury Festival gets major cash boost.

Excellent news that the festival is to get a £900,000 cash grant from the Art Council. Hope that will significantly ease any financial issues and secure next years event.

I don't think scope will be an issue. They'll be spoiled for choice with a 3 year backlog of acts.

I'm sure the price will go up, but wouldn't foresee it being a significant hike.

Prices have been going up by £5-10 each year for a while now so I’d expect that to continue.

Glasto would have survived either way but this does mean they are much less likely to need investors/corporate cash to stay alive.

A couple of people I know reasonably well (and who are familiar with the festival's finances) are of the opinion that the money, although welcome, was not really needed in order to hold next year's festival.

Will they be underwriting the insurance for other festivals? That sounds like a more important step if they want to save the events industry... I hope this isn't it for the arts because it won't be enough

Correct, whilst it’s of paramount importance to ensure the survival of the festival it’s also important to keep the ethos of it and continue to support the charities whether it’s the main three charities or the smaller ones such as the workers beer company and all the local groups.

I'm not sure about the current round of funding - but some Glastonbury-adjacent groups got their own grants in the first rounds last year, including Shangri-La, Block 9, and Continental Drifts.

They don't need the money but as far as I can tell there are very few venues I know of that haven't received a grant through this scheme. Lots of venues in my area popping up with these social media messages, it does seem like a good scheme.
