Rumours swirling (started by Alistair Campbell, I think) that this has been briefed by the Johnson camp so things don’t seem as bad for him when it all does come out…

yeah...and in the end Johnson isn't resigning no matter what, and it doesn't look like Tory MPs are going to kick him out, not yet anyway.

As far as yesterday's antics goes, I feel like Le Pen ran out of steam after making it to round 2. Maybe the French election got less coverage after the first stage but when stuff seeped through, I didn't feel like Le Pen capitalised on making it through. 40% voting for her is dispiriting, don't get me wrong, but it feels like she got less than expected.

I can't see Macron winning a third term, but then equally I didn't think he'd win a second so fuck do I know.

Ah my bad I wasn't aware they had a two term limit. Kinda interesting this has only been a thing since 2008 according to my quick Google search.

Thinking about it, Le Pen initially said she wouldn't bother standing again if she lost this one. It sounds like she may be reconsidering that stance in her initial interview after the exit poll, but that would make it interesting if she didn't.

yeah she could be back for another go...but 5 years is a long time and who knows what state France and europe will be in. I don't know much about Macron's party and when he's gone who will be his successor...maybe socialists and republicans will come back to dominate again, or maybe it will continue to be En Marche vs far left or right. France looks very divided though...bit like here with brexit and in US with Trump.

Consensus from French politicos is that the Republican and Socialist parties are a giant mess. The fact they got less than 10% combined in the first round indicates voters might have moved on from both. Not what I'm sure it means though, given I'm not sure what big an impact En Marche has beyond Macron.

Certainly it'll make 2027 very interesting. Although I will say it almost makes me sound as bad as the US news media, which seems to start the race for the next Presidential election the day after they just elected one.
