Morning. So looks like Russian forces still not able to take Kyiv, but are dropping bombs. Kharkiv, which I think is Ukraine's second city, is getting hit particularly badly, Russian missiles are taking out government, police, military and university buildings. Weapons for Ukrainian forces are still being flown in from abroad, and we just hope and pray Ukraine can keep going against the onslaught and by some miracle the invasion will be thwarted and something will happen. But...I expect Russia will just keep going, keep dropping missiles, keep pushing at Ukrainian resistance,  and eventually they will take out the Ukrainian leadership in Kyiv and then there will be some sort of surrender. Modern media means we can all follow this closely and it's just so fucking grim. War is so shit. So pointless.

Yeah I imagine Kyiv will fall eventually and then so will Ukraine there’s just too much firepower it seems sadly.

Always interesting to catch up with what's on Chomsky's mind:

https://truthout.org/articles/noam-chomsky-us-military-escalation-against-russia-would-have-no-victors/

Do you think the invasion will initiate a new era of sustained contestation between Russia (and possibly in alliance with China) and the West?

It’s hard to tell where the ashes will fall — and that might turn out not to be a metaphor. So far, China is playing it cool, and is likely to try to carry forward its extensive program of economic integration of much of the world within its expanding global system, a few weeks ago incorporating Argentina within the Belt and Road initiative, while watching rivals destroy themselves.

As we’ve discussed before, contestation is a death warrant for the species, with no victors. We are at a crucial point in human history. It cannot be denied. It cannot be ignored.

Yeah, Nato needs a plan for when Russia does take Ukraine...what then with the Baltics, Moldova, Romania etc? Need to plan for the worst. Putin obviously thinks the way to dominance is through force, not through economics...so need to match him with that. It's a new cold war. So, keep threat there...and then just keep trying diplomacy...all effort needs to be avoiding a war because it could be literally catastrophic.

One thing that has been impressive is european unity, but that might not hold as some countries affected by these sanctions more than others. EU are just going to have to up their military spending, they can't keep relying on US...what happens if Trump or someone else similary isolationist gets in?

This was v interesting.

Didn't know about the reliance of Crimea on the water from Ukraine. Explains the rapid invasion northwards from Crimea to secure the canal and presumably get the water flowing again as a quick win.

Yep, interesting, thanks, but did anyone else find his voice quite annoying!

Just listening on radio to bloke saying that Russia stalling near Kyiv is probably tactical to just surround the city and bomb and fighten them into surrender, because it will be very messy and bloody to take the city directly and they will want to avoid that. But, eventually they will have to move because of logistics, if start running low on supplies etc.
