mattiloy
looking like starmer would rather be off with those troublesome unions, sticking up for workers rights, can't they see he's trying to turn labour into the party for the bosses of the workers? next up, the 45th and final rebrand of the party under starmer: the (owners of the companies in which) labour (works for substandard pay and conditions) party Edited February 9, 2022 by mattiloy
Ozanne
A majority of the public back calls for a windfall tax on energy firms, of course the government won’t do it because it would be money away from the big firms but good to see the public want it. I don't really care any more about what a limited subset of the scientific community think anymore. Restrictions are as much about peoples feelings and politics as they are about medical issues and science. Two years in if you still need Whitty to tell you what to think then you have probably been living in a box. While the majority of healthy, vaccinated people will be ‘fine’ now, I’d like to hear scientific and medical views on what this change means for the vulnerable and immunocompromised. They will have no choice but to mix with the masses as they return to work (it seems like the brave new world with changes and a more flexible attitude to working was one big lie) and try to live their lives safely etc. Edited February 10, 2022 by Ryan1984

We're not the only country lifting all restrictions. But, we wouldn't be doing this yet if Bojo wasn't in so much trouble...

Neil
wtf are unite doing, trying to co-erse Labour into supporting them over a strike, its the sort of tactic to damage labour to lose the next election. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-60326688 Edited February 10, 2022 by Neil

Starmer obviously wants to distant labour from all this, tories still use winter of discontent to batter labour...but at same time unite are biggest funder to labour and labour need the cash. Hopefully something can be sorted behind the scenes.

It may well hurt labour councillors at local elections in a few months if bins not getting emptied....and it will hurt labour big time if Unite do go ahead and cut all funding. Whilst this decision has been rushed to try and help Boris this is the direction we are going in, so even without this naked act of self preservation in a couple of months we would be in a position where there is a background amount of COVID, through vaccines and exposure there is a good deal of protection, people like yourself who are more vulnerable will still be more vulnerable. Given this will be the case for years, what do you expect in terms of Government mandated protection? Proper sick pay seems like a no brainer as it would help contain all sorts of bugs if unwell staff just stayed home. There is a constant battle to increase cleanliness standards in hospitals and more mask wearing and better ventilation may be added to the fight against hospital acquired infections. Yearly booster vaccines for the vulnerable? I really don't know the answers but the conversation has to move on from restrictions to what is permanently acceptable.
