Weren't his band actually a Beach Boys tribute act before joining him?

Sort of. The Wondermints were a normal band who also happened to do some amazingly faithful Beach Boys covers. He apparently heard them play Cabinessense and was blown away, so they became the core of his live band, but other musicians were added, and some of the Wondermints have left over the years.

Completely agree.

When I was younger music was incredibly tribal. You liked what you liked and you wouldn’t be seen dead listening to anything outside of your genre. The last decade has broken all of this down, mainly due to the rise in steaming making music instantly accessible for everyone, also the decline and then death of publications such as NME and also the fact that there’s just too much good stuff out there. I certainly listen to a much more diverse range of artists than I did when I younger.

But there are definitely people who feel the need to demonstrate how cutting edge and diverse their tastes are and will champion any old crap whilst shitting on the older stuff.

This is probably the right way to put it. I think the typical “no pop shite at glasto book stereophonics” crowd are still stuck in the tribalism era and have never ventured outside of what they’ve always listened to. I personally think if the music industry is to go anywhere it needs to not listen to people like this. Or they can just go IOW as it seems like IOW is pandering to that crowd massively.

And yes - there are people which reject all rock and say that hyper pop should fill festival lineups - but I think I sit in the middle.

I love a good classic rock booking. I love a new artist being booked. What I hate is “glasto is a rock festival” “everything other than a band” is shite crowd. It feels like a time capsule opinion from the early 00s.

Biology by Girls Aloud is one of the greatest pop songs ever

Such a baller move making you wait 2 minutes for a chorus. Someone once did a huge thread on twitter about how Girls Aloud were the best guitar band of the 00s and I think about it every day.
