Your most controversial music opinions

I loved that Tony Bennet performance.  After several days in the mud and shit (I did spend quite a bit of that weekend in the Dance Tent) it was a wonderful tonic.  It gave me, as a then 20 year old, a fondness for crooners that I still have today.  The juxtaposition between the world he represented - all spotless shiny suits and Vegas standards, against the hordes of the mud caked, 5 days deep Glasto crowd was something that's not often, if ever, really been repeated on the farm.

Fairy snuff, I wasn't there but would agree his set was a tad ropey.

Artists all have an off day, look at some of glasto performances over the years, expectations dashed occasionally.

I only replied 9 months later as news of his illness is recent, thought the 13 min clip was quite moving, your post came up when I searched Tony Bennett hence my belated reply 😊

Didn't realise he'd recently been diagnosed - feel bad for slagging him now! ☹️

I've never got that whole Sinatra style swing stuff. My old man used to play that sort of music (and jazz) all the time, so I only went to see Tony Bennett so I could tell my Dad that I'd seen him. He always used to say to me "you'll get into it when you get older", but I'm 56 now & I still hate it, so I don't think I ever will!

My controversial music opinion is you can tell the age of this forum from the fact we have bloody punk vs. disco albums in the 2020s.

True, for me. I used to not talk about old music on here as it shows my age. But now I just think fuck it I’m glad I’m old enough to have seen Led Zeppelin, The Ramones, The Clash, etc.

No. I still love prog. Still listen to it when I’m in the mood. Gentle Giant and King Crimson this week…

Occasionally I'll pick a genre and listen to all the main acts involved. Right now I'm doing 70's prog, previously I've only listened to king crimson and pink floyd (who I love).

I've not listened to gentle giant yet but they are on the list.

So far I've concluded two things: genesis and jethro tull are so unbearably terrible it's hard to convey with words and secondly Focus rock! They bring the fun and energy of Hocus Pocus to a lot of their songs. I was pleasantly surprised by them

Funnily enough I’m working at my local venue for the upcoming Focus gig. I love them. Gentle Giant are an eclectic taste to say the least. Try Octopus or Freehand. I’m expecting you’ll hate them!!

Holland hasn't produced a lot of rock but Focus do a great job filling the gaps.

Yes, seen all the greats with their classic line ups, zeppelin, deep purple, stones, sabbath, yes, Tull, King Crimson etc.  Thanks to my late mum for financing most of the gigs and to the teachers that ignored me bunking off school to go and queue for tickets in Glasgow!

Dark Side of the Moon is one of my favourite albums ever, but all prog rock that I've heard by anyone that's not Pink Floyd just sounds annoyingly self indulgent other than one random Caravan song I liked. Need to check out Focus, don't think I've ever heard them. Do you have any recommendations of prog rock bands that I might have missed that aren't totally self indulgent?

Rush.

Their back catalogue is pretty big, but Moving Pictures is widely held to be their high point, and it is very accessible.

I also like some of the “newer” prog bands. Marillion have done some great stuff (Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at straws) and Dream Theater mix it well with Metal (Images and Words). But of course, if you don’t like prog, they will sound awful to you! Quite a lot of Phish has a prog element to it, but the live albums are the way to go (A Live One is a good place to start).

The Peter Gabriel era Genesis albums are (mostly) good. I’d recommend ‘Selling England By The Pound’ as a great entry point - it’s accessible whilst having some of their marquee prog songs (Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show etc), and their first ‘hit’ (I Know What I Like).

A fairy niche opinion, but Rick Beato from the YouTube's series "what makes this song great" is no such thing. He just describes the song, but never seems to offer any insights into why the compositional decisions are effective. Deeply frustrating video series.

But his son's pitch recognition is terrifyingly good, I'll give him that.

What makes this song stink is waaay better. And funnier.

Haha, I’ve spent the last 40 years having progressive (hate the name prog) rock as a guilty secret, furtively buying prog rock magazine as if it was some sort of extreme niche porn .  I feel liberated admitting it on here.  Now I’m away to listen to a Yes track, and not on headphones either,  back in half an hour.😉

I don’t think so. I guess it depends on your criteria. I tend to think of longer songs with multiple sections, changes in time-signatures, keys and styles. But even that’s a generalisation.

I guess Exogenesis Symphony is prog. But it’s not their defining sound.

they’re prog-ish…?

Well I will wait until they release a triple concept album with six tracks including a 15 minute drum  solo that includes giant gongs and then I will concede they are truly progressive. Meanwhile I will stick to in the court of the Crimson  King,  the zenith of the genre.  Toyahs husband at his best.

Sounds like some shit they’d pull
