Still, the original is still miles better than I would have thought the Village People could come up with.

Doesn't work, in my opinion, for my favourite band The Jam, albums 3 and 4 are far better than 1 and 2. There's always exceptions to any rule. 3rd albums by Bon Jovi, Primal Scream, Verve, Spiritualised are all considered to be better that previous output. Here's my controversial opinion though: First Verve album is far and away their best. Urban Hymns, Bittersweet Symphony aside, is a load of cack. I’m not sure I have ever made it through Urban Hymns without getting bored and switching off. History and TDDW are the only two decent Verve songs. It's between them and Stone Roses for the best debut album of all time. I don't think there's a single song from Humbug that I actually like. That blows my mind. Secret Door and Crying Lightning are incredible. Dance Little Liar is up there with the greatest lyrics of all time in my opinion.

Punksnotdead
Watched Simon and Garfunkel: the harmony game tonight, reminded me - Bridge over troubled water is a better album than anything by The Beatles or The Beach Boys! I don’t know why such comparisons have to be made tbh, and certainly don’t agree, but it is an absolute classic.

priest17
The Sun Is Often Out is the best britpop album. They didn't need to release anything afterwards but they're the one band that need to do an anniversary tour for the people who were 4 years old when it came out (sorry @Mardy)
priest17
Parquet Courts are the best people making music currently and have smashed through my earlier sweeping statement about bands getting worse as they get better. Probably the only band matching The Cribs and The Beatles in terms of consistency.

Matt42
I don’t think AM have a bad album. Some I come back to more than others. I don’t listen to them much anymore because I remember absolutely caning them in the lead up to Glastonbury and pretty much till the end of 2014. They were by far the biggest band going at that time. AM was absolutely massive. I don’t dislike AM, in fact some of their best live material is from that album. I think it just feels overexposed. Tranquillity was a weird era for the band. They picked up so many fans from AM they just didn’t do anything with. If they came back with another super commercial record I reckon we’d be speaking about them completely different now. Tranquillity left a bad taste in people’s mouths and to leave their fans for such a long time until the next one I do wonder what their future is. (It will have no effect on their size or ability to play big gigs, but I just wonder what their credibility will look like going forward). Ultimately I think fans who didn't like it at first will either shrug it off and think "that was a strange detour" or they'll go back to it and enjoy it more on each listen (this is me). I don't think there's going to be a bad aftertaste at all. At worst it's just a bit of a set-piece in their history. Most following them have twigged by now that they evolve musically at such a rate that they're not gonna stop and pander to fans of the last album, or the first album. Maybe AM fortuitously being a massive hit amplified the disappointment in some corners (much like Humbug at the time) but I don't think their fanbase is going anywhere this time. You’re always trying to spin a narrative where there isn’t one to be spun.

It’s getting harder to predict what direction they will go in next. I think Tranquility proved that they are not afraid to really shake it up.
