As much as they were remarkable at their most jangly, the stadium-balladry is good to tuck into now and again. All of it sounds pretty aged nowadays though. Mardy would hate it. Tracks like Everbody Hurts, Losing My Religion, End Of The World, Man On The Moon, etc are good songs - but so overplayed for so long that I still wouldn't actively seek them out. But they're not the full story. Automatic For The People may be emblematic of a certain type of serious and thoughtful "real" music, but its got some beautiful moments on it like Nightswimming and Find The River. I’m a sucker for more or less any music which has brass involved. The number of early 2000s run of the mill UK ska bands I could sing along every word to is crazy. Some of them will never have played to more than a couple of hundred people. I guess this goes back to the whole “music you listened to on your formative years” thing. CaledonianGonzo
Reminds me of Courtney Love's claim that saxophones don't belong in rock'n'roll. Though I think she backtracked on that, presumably after someone played her some Little Richard.

I’ll accept that there are exceptions to the rule 🙂 However 99% of saxophone solos consist of some over-complicated highly technical screechy nonsense ending on a big long note at which point the crowd goes wild. I hate it lol
TheSheriff
All this talk of sax not belonging in rock n Roll.... Mimo
I feel I should clarify my dislike of saxophone solos a little... Having a saxophone playing on your record - absolutely fine, can sound good 👍 That bit at a live gig where the saxophonist take centre stage and does a big OTT solo whilst everyone laps it up - I die a little inside 👎

Had they played this instead of Outlaw Pete, history would be very different.
Homer
I think it reflects badly on this thread that it took someone so long to say 'saxamaphooooone'. I know there's a pandemic on but that's no excuse to let standards slip!
