I’m intrigued now. I’ve never bought an REM album, or indeed ever listened to one. I’ve always had them down in the ‘worthy but dull’ category and they seem to be rated by *spit* ‘proper music fans’. Can i continue in my ignorance. I’m not really missing anything, right?

You could make a pretty dope REM playlist by ditching all the grandstanding rock tracks (e.g. The One I Love) and focusing on their more wistful, minor key Byrdsy moments (Fall On Me, Don't Go Back To Rockville, Perfect Circle, Near Wild Heaven and so on).

I recall being surprised and rather pleased when REM were announced as Glastonbury headliners in ‘99. Their previous UK tour had been a stadium shagging affair, with the likes of Blur and Radiohead supporting.

I remember queuing up for tickets for the Monster tour at the Glasgow SECC and a few weeks ahead of release they played the album on a loop whilst we waited.

Very much so. I love REM from start to finish, but IRS years >>> Warner Bros years. That sound was way more prevalent in their earlier work.

Fall On Me remains probably my favourite track of theirs.

They scratch different itches. As much as they were remarkable at their most jangly, the stadium-balladry is good to tuck into now and again.

All of it sounds pretty aged nowadays though. Mardy would hate it.
