Just wondering is Anybody else sober and in recovery ?

Just celebrated my 1 year of being sober .

Thats no herb or drink. both just dont agree with me.

herb just makes me mega paranoid, (even when im not smoking!) cant believe its taken 28years to realise this.

Drink makes me feel so, so damn unhappy, always has. hence never been much of drinker..  Always hated that pushy cmon have a drink, be a man , be one of the boys.

I see Glasto is going to be challenging from now on.

Just wondering

I think I'm joking, but I have alcoholism in my family. I suspect I've just about dodged that bullet, but you can never tell. I do like a drink or two and it's always something to keep an eye on.

The thing is, when you like getting wasted, you tend to hang out with people getting wasted, so I spent a few years thinking "I'm not as bad as (mates who would later be in recovery)", always comparing myself against the worst people, so getting a false sense of security.

Having said that, even before COVID, I don't see people very often any more. I think I'm too old, tired and busy to form any serious substance problem.

At least not at the moment!

some good points raised . To be 100% clear I have never had any addiction to alcohol or had a problem with it. It just makes me so damn unhappy... I mean just the one pint , I’m on a downer........ anyone else get this

Now as for weed, I love that shit! But then I would get the “fear” out the blue, and always during those special times some weird visual at the glade and boom I’m looking at the floor just want this shit to go away.

The mad thing is I would get this fear when sober, an that’s not good 😔, but I suppose 28 years of doing this shit finally caught up with me .

Ive had such an amazing time stoned 😎, and some of the best times of my life.

Christ reading this , sounds like I’m back in NA lol

im in a very good place, and happy as I can be btw

just needed to share and I welcome anyone else

Funk x

A good way of enjoying the festival sober is to volunteer. You need to stay fairly straight to manage the shifts anyway, and there is less peer pressure to drink or take drugs when you are socialising with people who are working the festival.

I do find these days that I have to allow myself a mood hangover if I drink.

Good work on a year clear!

Yep done this with oxfam for the last 3 years, boomtown, Glasto and Nass, and simply love it.

Congrats on 1 year 🙂

I stopped drinking about 4 years ago because alcohol just does not agree with me. I could not hold my drink at all (an embarrassing post-break up incident involving a very drunk me was actually the catalyst for me quitting), would be an absolute liability and it made my anxiety so much worse. It was definitely the right decision for me to quit.

2022 will be my first trip to Glasto and so many people have been open mouthed when they hear I'm going and won't be drinking. I always find that other people tend to have an issue with me not drinking at events more than I do, not sure if anyone else has found that? I'm not worried though, I've been to many a concert, holiday, wedding, pub, club, sober. I can't wait!

I'm second generation Irish and grew up within a drinking culture (despite my mom never tasting alcohol and my dad rarely touching a drop). I used to 'suffer' from alcohol misuse. I'd drink at least 3 bottles of red on a school night, or a bottle and a quarter of whisky. Fucking terrible times. I also used to get the fear when smoking at Glastonbury.

And then I saw the light - Mcat. It made me drink far less and I didn't get the fear when smoking. Result. Mind you I did spend about £400K on it, so it can be quite an expensive remedy!

So many people have more of a problem with me not drinking compared to me. It’s like they can’t respect someone who no longer drinks as it “is the society norm”.  Especially at festivals.

Lots of people will tell you they couldn’t do it themselves. A few people will tell you they are thinly of doing the same. A tiny amount will carry on as normal with you - and they are the best people.

I've seen Cocaine Anonymous posters dotted around the festival in numerous places and years. Always wondered if there were meetings for other issues elsewhere.

There is a twelve step tent in the healing fields who offer safe support to all the addictions. It works.

This.

People really think I'm odd by not drinking.. My parents for one. I find it quite disrespectful. Telling my parents I don't drink because it makes me unhappy, they suggested I speak with the doctor ffs. Don't get me wrong I've had one or two episodes in my life with chronic anxiety, and had to speak with the doctor, but led to believe that this is becoming more common for people.

My anxiety isn't affected by drink, I just feel it puts me on a mega downer, I'm a happy cheeky chappy, and want to keep it that way.

In work events I get hassle for it, so I always drive and have to make an excuse.

Agreed it comes down to handful of people who do get it. My best man - Glasto partner in crime gets it 100%, and love him for that.

I do miss that vibe with the weed, and how it seemed to open my ears to music, especially the Electronica, ambient and anything similar to the orb 😉

Thanks for the responses here, awesome

Obviously a different kettle of fish (pun intended) but it's the same with being vegetarian, or even trying to eat or shop ethically.  I've found it the norm that people will ask you why you do it, then attempt to knock down any of your arguments for doing so. And it's not unusual for them to get shitty when doing so.

And nights out when I've just not fancied a drink, it's always the same questions. Are you ill? Are you driving? Have you got something on tomorrow? Just endless.

I often wonder if people find it holds up a mirror to their own behaviours, and the only way they know how to react is to get defensive. More like trying to convince themselves than anyone else.

I've never drank or taken drugs as I saw and suffered first hand in my family the problems of addiction and decided that if genetic fate had dealt me a bad hand maybe the only real choice was refusing that first one. I would definitely agree that people seem very uncomfortable in this country with those who don't drink. I've definitely come across it many times and I think in many ways it's one of the root causes of Islamophobia. People seem to have a deep mistrust of somebody not drinking ( a lot of which in my experience seems to stem from them not liking the fact that you will remember how they have behaved when drunk)

Alcohol is a depressant and I would say that there a lot of problem drinkers if not necessarily alcoholics out there. I know so many people who get angry or tearful every time they have a drink and I think they'd be better off and probably have much happier nights out without it.

Agree. I’m veggie, GF, DF, AF. A proper nightmare to cater for. People feel threatened by other people’s acts. It’s weird.

Photo on the left is how I remember my drinking days. I’m 5 years older on the right.

I mean, you do look like you're having more fun on the left 😉

What's AF? Is that alcohol free?

I know with the rest of it though, as Mrs Q is GF and DF as well.  People love having us round for dinner 😄
