Album of the Month Tournament - Jan 2021

HELLO

So I had this idea years back to start an 'Album of the Month' tournament, where all you absolute rankers can put your money where your mouth is and rank your favourite albums released in each month, to be held accountable to your first impressions in front of your eFests peers. I guess 2021 is a year where we know from the start that we're going to have a lot of time and, looking at the New Music thread, you are using it to listen to a lot of new album releases.

The rules:

  • Contest window: between the last 0:00 Friday of the month in question to 23:59 the first Thursday of the month following (eg. Jan 29-Feb 4,  Feb 26-Mar 4).
  • The system: Choose any three albums released during the month in question in order of preference and these albums will receive. The best of which receives three points, second best two points and the third best one point. See below:

    1. Album A (3 POINTS)
    2. Album B (2 POINTS)
    3. Album C (1 POINT)

    • Any entries who say "so many good records. Can't choose! So in no particular order..." do not understand that this is a game and your votes will be expunged from the contest, you indecisive horrible individual.
    • Everyone else, I will assume the order they are listed is the order of preference. Even if you number it 1. 2. 3. I will assume that is in order of favourite and not the points you are giving unless expressed otherwise.
  • Point totals: At the end of the contest period, these scores will be added up and we will have a top three albums of the month, which will be announced shortly after the contest window. This will be a thing in itself but it will also go into the end of year vote in December*
    • Tie-break scenarios. The order of tie-breakers are as follows: most top placings, most second placings, then a tiebreak throwdown.
    • Final period. Considering that we'll need to vote in December, the Nov/Dec votes can merge into one period which ends partway into December before the Christmas release lull (sorry Bublé)
  • * The end of year vote isn't intended to be a replacement for Swedge's list - this is a freaky sideshow to keep us entertained for a piece of each month. It would be outrageous if the votes were actually similar and representative, given the limit of three per month and the short amount of time to assess each album.
  • Please note, someone can create a thread and moderate the contest for a new month without my go-ahead. I won't be mad as long as you don't bring the game into disrepute with bribes and stuff. The reason I've not done this before is I can't trust myself to do this on time, but I can trust you guys.

So there we have it. The UEFA Nations League of album ranking - complicated, forgettable and not as good as the bigger event BUT WE DO IT ANYWAY.

If there are any questions or notes for improvement, fire away. Starts tomorrow 29/01/21.

tl;dr - pick your three favourite albums released in a calendar month

I'm always a few weeks behind on new music so reckon I'll use this as a resource to find new music rather than vote myself, but love the idea.

Can't believe that's almost the end of January already.

Think I've managed to listen to 3 new albums this month so suppose I could just rank them.

Question on the delivery window.

Technically (!) the way you've set the numbers means that submissions can start at the very beginning of tomorrow (00:00) and finish at the very beginning of next Friday (00:00).

That means that we cannot submit any rankings after 23:59 on Thursday, i.e. submissions will not be accepted on Friday.

Is that what you meant? Or did you mean to include all day on Friday 5th Feb?

I know that's nitpicky and I apologise profusely, but I've been doing a load of contract drafting at work and that sort of shit comes up all the time when it comes to contract end dates 😄

Just changed it to 23:59 Thursday.

I hope you are proud of yourself.

edit: tell me to specify the time zone and I'm turning the car around!

Yay this is a great idea and will be interesting to see what first impressions of albums are accurate. Sometimes albums are growers so actually think having this to reflect on could be really useful come December for the end of year finale.

This is one of the things I love about E-fests by the way as my husband hates ranking things but I bloody love it!! Also will be a great incentive for me to dedicate some time to music.

😄 Some ep's are as long as some albums these days and 6 great songs can be better than 6 great songs and 2 alright ones stuck in the middle that break the vibe! Just making sure I've got my i's dotted and t's crossed just in case!
