2022 Headliners

There's a handful of bands that can make a fresh jump to headliner for them. Ghost are on headliner form and should be a contender, Bring Me should heave headlined already and KoRn already pull headliner sized crowds.

The biggest challenge for them is trying to convince bands to play as The Who, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Blink 182, Bon Jovi,Nickelback etc could help ease their headliner troubles but they don't seem to want to play or Copping is just shit at persuading them.

But the annoying part is the undercard. It seems younger bands like Architects have lost interesting playing at Download and there's acts like Code Orange, Ghost, Greta Van Fleet, Slaves, IDLES, Royal Blood, Nothing But Thieves etc have never played the fest or never played the mainstage despite some of the most talked about rock/punk/metal etcs in the UK for last few years.

Ghost would be a great choice. I think the problem with KoRn is that they play the festival so regularly that it would just seem a disappointment to put them on a headline slot. If they don't do anything special in the next 2-3 years, having them headline in 2023 when they only sub headlined this year seems silly.

Yup, they should be grabbing Pearl Jam, I'm ridiculously surprised Rage are at Reading and not Download and Bring me should of already headlined but now aren't even on the lineup and Reading have them.

Ok il change it. How about tweaking it to say that download is stuck in a position where certain bands in the metal scene sell the most tickets and some are harder to push into that headline position? I’m not attributing blame but it’s easier for R&L to propose new headliners than Download.

Plus I think people buy tickets to download because it’s a guaranteed annual Maiden, Metallica, Def Leppard et al gig. At least one will show up each year and these fans are pretty loyal.

Thats pretty much it yeah. Fans who want to go see a Maiden/Kiss/Slipknot will always go because they know they're seeing someone they like adn there will be a few acts on the lower cards that they'll be into.

I mentioned it earlier but with Reading, they actively made changes and have done so to the point that they could have a headliner from dance music/hip hop music and indie music, with metal/punk acts in the sub headliner positions and sell the festival out. They could also do 3 indie headliners and still sell just as well, because the genres diverse enough and younger fans don't turn their nose up at newer bands/acts.

Nah, loads of acts are back on tour at the same time so it's a generally more choice for fests. However I’ve seen people are still complaining just because they can and try to minimize the acts though, like;

Muse are no longer a stadium act because they are at IOW even though they had a sold out stadium tour a few years ago.

Glasto are desperate as they have Billie Eillish despite being a white hot international acts who sold shit loads of dates.

Rage Against The Machine at Reading only appeals to CEX workers.

Dave isn’t a headliner nor is Stormzy.

The only exception to putting out a stronger than usual line up is Download who have stuck with almost the same headliners since 2020 despite Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold etc being available now and choosing not to replace the bands that have pulled out so bands like The Distillers have been bumpedup but look out of place headlining the second stage or brining in shit like Steel Panther. Of course Download tries to offer the most boring line ups possible every year so it’s really no change.

RATM will have a crowd which is considerably smaller than AM and Dave in all fairness.

edit - as far as Reading’s big 3 goes, Glastonbury is going to have a tough time beating them. Its the strongest for a very long time in my opinion

Probably immediately after that Eurovision performance

Lol. I think a few years ago Emily was targeting her closely and suddenly she unfollowed her and didn’t mention her again.

I’d be surprised if she was in line for 2022, maybe they’ve picked conversations back up and she’s more likely for 2023?

Download is Download. It is trying to appeal outside of ‘the metal scene’ with long-established, household names such as Maiden and KISS and Def Leppard. It’s trying to appeal to the general music population I guess, like people here wanting to see Aerosmith, GNR, etc. at Glastonbury and not expecting to see Ghost and Deftones. So if anything, it looks the way it does up-top because of its ignorance towards the metal scene.

KoRn would need a few years away but think of the heroes welcome they would get when they finally do return and as a headliner too.

Acts like this are where they should probably be going, massive rock bands who 10-15 years ago would have played Reading but are now no longer really that festival's audience.

Copping has talked about all of those before but has never pulled it off though.

I've never been overly impressed with Copping myself, Downloaders seem to celebrate as he has a hard job and pulls off a few miracles like AC/DC or Faith No More but he seems to get burnt alot of the time. Like Faith No More's return went from exclusive, to festival exclusive to just playing the fest or getting Blink 182 to headline in the 00s but then they spit up and there's a story about in 08 he thought he had booked Rage, Foos and Rammstein to headline (this was before Rammstein use to play festivals) so he put his feet up on a job well done only for all three of them decided they didn't want to play so Download ended up with KISS, Lost Prophets and The Offspring in a last minute scramble whilst there were options like Sex Pistols playing the same weekend at IOW, Slipknot would have been a better bump etc.

Maybe his headliner bookings are the safe same old thing as when he tries something else he fails to get them or does with heavy compromise like AC/DC refusing to be on the line up hoodie.

I'm torn on Madonna. Part of me thinks that ship has sailed, but then I think it's Madonna. A greatest hits set would destroy, a set of newer material with a sprinkling of classics would probably stink the place out. Depends on her ego, I guess, but yeah, I'm in.

Dave is one of the biggest UK rappers out there at the moment, probably at similar levels to Stormzy when he was getting ready to headline. He'd comfortably be a Glastonbury sub at he moment and exactly the sort of headliner booking R/L have been making in recent years.

Definitely wouldn't suggest he's a weak booking.

Definitely not weaker IMO. For the very little it’s worth I think Dave is a fair bit better than Stormzy.

Not sure why you think she unfollowed Madge. Just took a butcher's and she's still following.

Now, if she unfollowed and then re-followed, what does THAT mean???

A greatest hits set would be amazing, if she's on form such as Kyle. I don't know if I could do an hour and a half - 2 hours of her though. The thought of going to see her and her doing some of her more recent 'album' set lists is just an awful way to spend an evening at Glastonbury. I probably wouldn't go for that reason.

That’s what he is saying has happened.

Although, I think/hope Glastonbury isn’t booked in Instagram DM’s to the artists.

This is entirely it though isn't it? And I know we've been round this block several times. Even I would be tempted by a greatest hits set (though it wouldn't take much to drag me away). Anything like the shows she's been doing in recent years and the field empties in record time.

I assume it’s all about who follows who, which is why I’m bracing myself for Nigella Lawson subbing Dermot O’Leary on the Sunday.

Why do I get the feeling this post is going to be a key piece of evidence in a future restraining order ruling?

It’s Emily’s close interaction the McCartney family which keeps my Macca hopes ticking. So be careful what you discount! That’s all we have at the mo.

Speaking as someone that is a Madonna fan – she is in charge of a movie biopic that's in development at the moment and there will be lots of career-retrospective stuff like reissues incoming over the next couple of years as she's recently signed a huge deal with Warner to represent her catalogue, so there's likely to be lots of media activity in that respect.

However she's extremely picky about live stuff now because of her age, recurring vocal/physical injury, and general artistic preferences for smaller performances. It's Madonna, so she'll always do what the fuck she wants, but given her history of cancellations over the past few years I'd be surprised if she wants to scale up to this sort of high risk/high reward festival circuit.
