New Death From Above (1979)

Another new album to add to the March 26 pile.

Oh my. I was absolutely sure that we'd seen the last of DFA after the criminal underappreciation of their BEST album Outrage is Now.

This one's a corker too. Channelling late-era Strokes in that bit in the middle. So hyped.

What's with the name though? I thought they'd got rid of the affix. Has James Murphy decided he was being too kind and taken his ball back?

Yeah I’m not sure. I believe they said they’d keep the ‘1979’ on all of their social media/online presence etc (presumably because it’s easier to search/find) but seems like they might’ve just gone back to it altogether here.

I suppose they had the ‘1979’ far longer than they were ever without it so seemed kind of dumb and pointless to me that they’d drop it now anyway.

Good point. I guess that's what they realised when it comes to branding and merch and all that. Alex G wlll be thinking the same in a year or two.

Only just got around to listening to the new Serpentwithfeet single. Really like it! New album out March 26.

This single was co-written and produced by Sampha. You can definitely feel his influence in this song. It feels a lot more upbeat that a lot of his previous tracks and has more of a typical song structure. It has Serpent’s beautifully ethereal vocals but over a typical Sampha “beat” which works well. More radio friendly but not in a bad way.

Art pop / alternative r&b

Whats out tomorrow then? Black Country new road, Foo fighters and Staves my highlights

Foos and Staves are the only ones on my list, which normally means I'll find about 5 others that I'd forgotten about or wasn't aware of 😄

The ones you’ve mentioned + Hayley Williams, The Weather Station, TV Priest and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets for me, plus the rest I’ve forgotten about or was unaware of. Good day!

TV Priest might be worth a listen, although if I remember the singles from last year it's very similar to Fontaines DC in a lot of ways. Can't get in to Hayley Williams' solo stuff. Will give the other two a couple of tracks and see what comes up.

Simultaneously the best and worst band name I’ve ever heard.
