circus92
Really struggled to keep both Albums and Singles down to only 10 - some great stuff this year. To me a very clear trend developed early on, and continued throughout the year - the ladies smashed it! Makes you wonder what is going on with all these festivals dominated by male acts - are they not seeing what is going on out there? There was only ever going to be one winner for me - Folklore, but surprisingly Haim pushed it really close - absolutely cracking album. Album of the Year Taylor Swift – Folklore HAIM - Women in Music pt. III Halsey – Manic Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia Yumi Zouma – Truth or Consequences The Weeknd - After Hours Doves – The Universal Want Charli XCX - How I’m Feeling Now Jessie Ware – What’s Your Pleasure The Killers – Imploding The Mirage Bubbling under / just missed the cut (all female!) - Gaga, Rina Sawayama, The Big Moon, Kylie, Beabadoobee, Lianne La Havas, Grimes Tracks of the Year Taylor Swift – August Haim – Hallelujah James Blake – Are You Even Real? London Grammar – Baby It’s You Yumi Zouma - Cool For A Second The Big Moon – Your Light The 1975 – If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) Charli XCX – enemy Dua Lipa – Cool Anderson.Paak - Lockdown Edited December 1, 2020 by circus92

Mellotr0n
Not listened to anything like the amount of new music I set out to - like many I'm sure, fell back on comfort listening this year. Albums of the Year Close Talker - How Do We Stay Here? (FFO The National, Bombay Bicycle Club) The Strokes - The New Abnormal Baths - Pop Music / False B-Sides II Hayley Williams - Petals For Armor Biffy Clyro - A Celebration Of Endings (almost didn't include it, as despite generally being a fun plod through 00s rock influences (with some fun Infinityland style oddness thrown in), the track Instant History is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. IMO, of course. There are other albums I have listened to, but none that have impacted me enough to assign them any points. Been a singles person this year. Singles of the Year The Strokes - At The Door (hated the lack of drums at first, but now my favourite production decision of the year) Close Talker - Arm's Length Baths - Wistful (Fata Morgana) Billie Eilish - my future (took a while to get to grips with it, now think it's genius) Hayley Williams - Simmer Death Stare - Reverie (one of those strange rare occasions that an Instagram advert is accurate, great post-rock) Muzz - Red Western Sky (Interpol meets Walkmen covering The National) Jack Garrett - Mara Biffy Clyro - North Of No South (hoping to enjoy that gargantuan riff live at Download next year...) Holy F*ck feat. Alexis Taylor - Luxe

Quark
Point of order @SwedgeAntilles. If a single is from 2019 but it's on an album from 2020, is it eligible or no? Also, are songs limited to singles or are album tracks eligible?

I'll take the 2nd question first; I've said 'tracks' so it can be any song, single or not. This is mainly due it being a long time since I knew what constitutes a single vs promo track etc. etc. so album tracks are eligible. Bearing that in mind it makes sense to me to allow cases like your first question. Therefore both are eligible. I am a benevolent Father Listmas. FloorFiller
1. Fiona Apple - Fetch The Bolt Cutters 2. Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud 3. Empty Country - Empty Country 4. Sault - Untitled (Rise) 5. Run the Jewels - RTJ4 6. The Microphones - Microphones in 2020 7. Taylor Swift - folklore 8. Deftones - Ohms 9. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia 10. Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today Feel like I've forgotten about a bunch of stuff, but also feel like the best albums this year were the most obvious big releases hence my list looking pretty similar to two or three publication lists posted in the AOTY thread. Need to have a think on songs so I'll do that one later.

Funny, I was fully expecting you to have Folklore at Number 1 😜 It all depends on the perspective you come from when you compile these lists. Many of the music publication lists currently being put online are clearly just trying way too hard to be cool / alternative and you get the feeling some of them think the more obscure the better. My list is probably a bit uncool, but is based entirely on what I found myself listening to and enjoying, and without a doubt "Folklore" completely hit the spot this year. I was already a huge fan, but the fact it came completely out of the blue (right in the middle of lockdown), was written, recorded and produced in under three months, was a complete change of lane for her and yet was still packed with quality is an amazing feat from someone operating at the peak of her powers. Not that 2020 is going to be a year to look back on with much fondness, but in years to come when I think back to what music I enjoyed during this year, Folklore will be the clear standout. An easy choice for Album of the Year.
circus92
Also loving the recognition HAIM – Women in Music Pt. III is getting - a fantastic return to form.
