Coutinho has never been a star player in the same way a Hazard or De Bruyne has. Even when he was doing well at Liverpool. Barcelona dramatically overspent on him. For a club that could probably have gone out and signed whoever they wanted, they really didn't have much strategy, as has been pointed out already.

He was always massively talented and in his last 12 months he started to become that star player (think he got about 20 goals and loads of 10+assists), but he left Liverpool just as he was making that step up and never regained that form. He was never worth £140m though and Barca doubled their bid in less than 6 months without having any need for him, seemed like they wanted to prove they could get whoever they wanted.

Hazard not pulling up many trees in madrid, probably a bigger flop than coutinho.

In under 2 years at Madrid he has been injured for a total of 320 days. Might that have something to do with it?

For contrast in 7 years at Chelsea he was injured for a total of 192 days.

Hmmm. Suarez at Liverpool was a star player. Coutinho not for me.

Still played 24 games and scored 3 goals. When you add in this, injuries and fee he will go down as one of footballs biggest disasters.

I wonder how much Chelsea have lost in add-ons because of this

As far as I'm aware - €100m was the initial fee with the potential to rise to €160.

€100m plus €30 in guaranteed bonuses and the final €30 in performance related bonuses - so the loss is probably minimal in the grand scheme of things.

Real Madrid's transfer business in 2019 kinda hasn't really worked out tbf, given the same summer also saw them blow a ton of cash on Luka Jovic, who they've since loaned out, and paying that off plus a few other 40M Euro plus players is probably a big part as to why they signed nobody last summer.

Hazard's injuries haven't helped, though shows what I know as I thought he was beginning to get a decent run and instead it turns out he's injured again. Maybe it just shows Chelsea picked a great time to cash in.

Jovic was in fantastic form at Frankfurt though. He's scoring again now he is back there too. He's clearly a decent striker but players can tend to struggle at Madrid for one reason or another.

Away from home but caught a bit of the Southampton vs Chelsea match on what I think was Bein sports. The interesting bit was they had Arsene Wenger on as a guest who's head of global football now at FIFA.

They asked him about Covid and he said if all goes well with the vaccines we should have events where large amounts of people congregate back by December 2021. However if it turns out the vaccines don't work as well against one of the mutations he doesn't think events like these will return for over 5 years!
