So, if so many people here support BLM (major backers of the Dems and vice-versa) and are obv. very anti-Trump, why is it always "racism" that has held people back? Chicago's demographics are 32% white, 30% Hispanic and 28% black, with a very long history of black mayors and Democrat held.

If you really cared about institutional racism and support BLM you would go after the Democrats for it.

Biden - 47 years in politics.

Pelosi - 45 years.

Chuck Schumer - 45 years. 

Why didn't they do anything about police reform and choke holds and police brutality?

Trump - 4 years in politics. Made choke holds illegal except in life or death situations. 

I don't think anyone in this thread thinks the systemic racism that is the result of hundreds of years of oppression is somehow all Trump's fault, I don't think Trump has been much mentioned here.

Even Black Lives Matter themselves set up in 2013 so they must have thought racism was an issue under the Democrats as well.

Do you, hand on heart, believe that you hold no bias when it comes to race? Because, if you do, then you're pretty unique.

The whole point is that we are all biased. The whole point is that we should look at:

- our own bias

- how many people (aka institutions) filled with people like us let their bias cause issues

That's it. It's not a fight, it's not an us v. them. It's a realisation that our everyday bias cumulatively impacts others.

BLM has asked us to take a look at our bias and for 99.99999% of people, there's work to be done and it's obvious.

Think people gave him the benefit of the doubt at first and thought he was a genuine poster, where as by this point its clear he's some sort of massive alt-right twit and racist bellend.

The thing is I've encountered a few people with the same sort of tactic on forums over the past week- they start by pretending they're nervous and just want an innocent 'rational' debate of 'facts' and how they like to share this 'interesting' article or video (turn out to be alt-right style sources), it soon descends into utter clap trap and their mask slips. No idea if it's a coincidence, or they've learned to try to hide their racist twaddle from experience, or what, but I think engaging with them is pointless. 

Their basic argument is : racism against black people doesn't exist, the real racism is against white people, people who call racist people are the real racists, Democrats are more racist than trump, they vote/support trump because he helps black people, black people are to blame for everything that happens to them, BLM are the real racists , people who complain about racism are a bigger problem than racism itself. Quite the amount of mental gymnastics to hold that level of complete BS together.

For anyone who hasn't read it, can really recommend Renni Eddo-Lodge's book "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race". Obvious one I know but it's been on my reading list for a shamefully long time and am just reading it now. Does a great job of unpacking these kind of arguments.

It's sad really, don't know how people can go to Glastonbury and come away from it thinking "you know what, I really must continue to be racist and sexist, and spend more time on forums campaigning against all attempts to make the world fairer and more equal, alienating potential friends and fulfilling social conne along the way- THATS the real purpose in life!"

Yep I am currently reading this as well. Like you it had been on my list for some time. I just decided it was time to move it up the priority list. I have also just read a book by Ben Rhodes (a member of Obama's team and foreign policy adviser and speech writer) and it brought home to me just how complicated American politics is and how hard it is for them to get anything done.

I'm enjoying it. Not really sure what you're asking but it's well written and easy to follow. Nothing has been particularly controversial to me so far, it's just very articulately and simply put. I've heard her on podcasts and things before though so she's far from new to me, just hadn't read the book itself yet!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative. I saw the book come up in the news a week or two ago (or whenever it entered mainstream attention) and you couldn't get it - on back order online & all. I never went any further than that, but this thread reminded me & so it lead to a quick check online. It's now about, and I was reading the reviews (Amazon). They seemed ... Ok.  Somewhat critical of the numbers. I was curious to see if you thought it was a "fad" read or genuinely worth the time.

If we're all bias, how come they only focus in black people? It's identity politics at its worst, separating ppl into the colour of their skin. 

BLM will do nothing but harm relations. You can see that through the retaliation to their riots.
