The only one I listen to is called Reply-All. I have little to no idea about podcasts so it might be the most popular one online for all I know, but in case anyone doesn't know what it is: a pair of americans investigate mysteries and culture related to the internet. My favourites were one about feral hogs, which spun out of a meme where non rural twitter users lost their minds over a man's hypothetical scenario involving 30-50 feral hogs fighting his children. Another about hijacked uber accounts and one about a stolen snapchat account are very important listens. The majority of us don't take online security seriously, and we don't even realise it.

I'm not too sure what exactly a podcast is, despite looking up a definition. However, when I was in my teens I used to listen to a BBC Radio production of Lord of the Rings. I really enjoyed it in those days lying on my bed just listening to the words and imagining the scenes and scenarios in my head. This allowed my very sore pecker a rest, because I used to do an awful lot of w*nking in them days too! Anyway, I've found that it available in full I think here (see below). Is this a podcast?

I listen to a lot of the comedy podcasts on your list.  I'm not sure whether you go down the dark, deadpan, surreal route such as Blue Jam, The Day Today etc. but if you do, my current favourite is definitely worth a punt:

I used to love The Day Today (a bit less than Brasseye). Thanks!

I was going to update each podcast with a little definition of each but I can’t seem to edit my original post.

Hi Yog! A podcast is basically highlights of a radio show but without the music for licensing reasons or just a people recording their thoughts, insights or interviews. I tend to lean towards comedy based ones, they remind me of mates chatting rubbish down the pub, but their are lots of others on almost any genre from learning new languages, politics, mindfulness, education, fitness, sport. Many, even the big ones, are good at receiving emails, correspondence & replying to listeners with advice, life hacks, etc.

There are podcasts with music like Hospital Records, Monster Cat (that I know of) etc which are more like DJ sets or reviews of new music. Some podcasts are allowed to play brief snippets of music like the BBC or radio station based ones.

I think the Tolkien link might be more of a ‘audio book’ or serialised drama but all good. I’ll save it for the lock down.

I find podcasts can be a great way to relax before bed or hearing a familiar voice in the background whilst doing chores.

the late night alternative with Iain Lee

As in... Dangerous Danan?

I listen to the Iain Lee one, became a fan of his after watching him on I’m A Celeb. I knew he had a radio show previously but didn’t know he had a late show on air at the time!

If you are interested in Tom Waits then I'd recommend Song by Song. It is working chronologically through every single Tom Waits song with an episode each.  The chat can be a bit banal at times depending on the guests but as an exercise in giving your focus to Waits's entire back catalogue it's very worth while. The focus on the stage production of The Black Rider during The Black Rider season really brought another level of appreciation for that piece of work.

Hello Bisque,

Thanks for taking the time out to explain that to me. Previously I've let the word podcast go in one ear and out the other, without really registering it or wondering what one is. I can be quite thick on that front.

I get what you are saying about listening to something late at night in bed to relax / comfort you. Many years ago Radio 4 used to do that for me, but i haven't listened to it in years now.

Thanks once again.

Yes and he doesn’t really care about telling stories of 90s people all off their chops.

Right I am subscribing to that.

The Magic Sponge is a great podcast to hear stories from footballers & what they got up to in the late 90’s/2000’s. Graham Stack’s one is brilliant from beating rival supporters up, to stealing a JCB in Belgium & crashing the Arsenal team bus.

Usually go through quite a few whilst travelling, long coach journeys through Asia with the shits.

A lot of those podcasts are no longer going & the only daily one I keep up to date with is Christian O’Connell on Gold 1043.3 in Melbourne.

I’m also doing a lot of trail cycling so can burn through a few pods whilst exercising during lockdown & have been doing DIY at home.

I’ll be honest & admit to subscribing to a few youtubers that are now podcasting, their content is awful but it keeps me in the loop with what the kids are into at school. I try not to skip through them but when they start talking about Minecraft the skip 30sec option is always their.

edit: and for others like Joe Rogan where they can be 2 hours long I’ll only listen if he has a guest on I like. Same with Private Parts, Richard Herring & a few others, I only listen if they have a comedian on I like otherwise it’s some dross from some reality show or someone I’m just not interested in hearing.

You've mentioned them in your post, but just to throw my support behind The Adam Buxton Podcast and any podcasts with James Acaster. All great listens.

There's something really comforting about Adam Buxton and he has some really interesting guests. Jonny Greenwood obviously a must for people here.
