Mamba
I'll have to go pretty old school, although my memory is failing me... 1. Biffy Clyro (2013) - I made the claim at the time that it was the best Reading headline set I'd ever seen and I'll stick to it. 2. Rage Against The Machine (2008) - great but I've seen them better elsewhere including 2000 but not headlining 3. Beastie Boys (1998) - my first weekend. Prodigy before them were probably better though. 4. Foo Fighters (2002) 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers (1999) - wouldn't go near them now, but just after Californication, I can still hear Scar Tissue being sung around the campsite. 6. Pearl Jam (2006) 7. Smashing Pumpkins (2007) 8. Metallica (1997) - my first day trip to Reading Edited April 22, 2022 by Mamba
JimMacVeigh
Biffy Clyro - 2013. The greatest festival set I’ve ever seen (2016 and 2021 are both unbelievable too). Linkin Park - 2003. It was my first time going, and I’ve seen them better, but you know…first festival experience! Pearl Jam - 2006. No gimmicks, just amazing songs. and a few non main stage… Manic Street Preachers (R1) - 2008 Faith No More (R1) - 2009 Hot Hot Heat (Carling) - 2007

Was not even that big of a fan before I’d seen them, but I don’t know if it was just a combination of everything on the night (very flat NIN set before them, absolutely torrential rain at points which made the stage show look incredible, a lot of my friends there seeing a band who they genuinely loved) but they knocked it out of the park that night! Definitely holds its own with the best headline sets I’ve seen.

VCK
Metallica in 2008 and Radiohead in 2009 are the two that stand out the most in my memory banks.

I found Radiohead frighteningly dull and I’m a fan. The stupid arty crap they did with the screens ruined it for anyone not right up the front, no idea what was going on and it in no way enhanced the music otherwise

NorthernSoul52
As a veteran of a grand total of four headline sets... Metallica '15 at Leeds. Hands down, no contest with the rest I've seen in the flesh. Mumford and Sons were better that year than I would have once given them credit for, though.
