When will this shit end?

Is it just me or is this a very confusing new rule, which has been announced today? Surely you would only stop for petrol if you need to...?

“The Department for Transport has issued new guidance on travelling during the epidemic.

But drivers have been left confused by instructions that you must only stop for petrol "if you really need to".

It also urges people not to share cars with those outside their household or support bubble”.

Damn, I usually stop at every service station and add £5 each time. Will need a drastic rethink now.

There was a discussion the other day on when children should be tested.  The headmaster of my daughter's school just passed on this guidance from the Track and Trace lot:

Quote

Dear parents and guardians,

This is an important letter to share some information on how we can work together to make sure we can continue to give children and young people the best education in the safest way possible.

One important part of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of pupils, parents and our communities is testing for coronavirus. We all have a duty to make sure that the right people have access to get tested at the right time. Every time a test is used inappropriately, a person with Covid-19 symptoms may miss out on getting tested.

Therefore, I ask that you all follow these principles:

▪ You should only book a test if your child has any of these three coronavirus symptoms:

1. a high temperature: any new high temperature where your child feels hot to touch on their chest or back (you do not need to measure the temperature)
2. a new continuous cough: coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
3. a loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste: a noticeable loss of smell or taste or things smell and taste different to normal

▪ Your child does not need a test if they have a runny nose, are sneezing or feeling unwell but do not have a temperature, cough or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste because these are not normally symptoms of coronavirus.

▪ If you are unsure about whether to get a test, please check the official list of symptoms on the NHS website, which is reviewed regularly: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/

▪ Only the person with symptoms should get a test. You do not need to get a test for anyone else in the household unless they also have any of the three symptoms listed above. All members of the household need to self-isolate whilst waiting for the test result.

▪ If the person with symptoms’ test comes back positive, other members of their household should continue self-isolating for 14 days and only get a test if they develop coronavirus symptoms.

▪ If a pupil in a class or bubble tests positive for coronavirus, anyone who is advised to self-isolate does not require a test unless they subsequently develop symptoms.

No one else in the same class or bubble as the symptomatic person needs to take any action unless advised by the school. Schools have detailed guidance and access to a Department for Education and Public Health England helpline for advice and support.

Contacts of a person who has tested positive must follow the guidance carefully and in full, which means they must stay at home for 14 days. This is because it can take several days following contact with an infected person before an individual develops symptoms or the virus can be detected. Students should only book a test if they get symptoms.

The NHS has produced some guidance to help parents understand when their child can and cannot attend school which you may find useful: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthybody/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/

It is vital for children’s learning and future opportunities that they are able to return to school and college. It is therefore vitally important that all we work together and do our bit to make this possible.

Yours Sincerely,

What list of symptoms are they using for younger kids? I'm sure there was an article in the guardian a few weeks ago saying their symptoms tended to be very different (stomach cramps and sickness, fatigue and some other stuff)

This is primary school level, so they're not paying any attention to that research as far as I can tell.  Unless you mean nursery age?  I was under the impression those symptoms were for primary age kids?

With testing result delays as well people should be looking at specimen date... Which does not show such a sharp increase although of course more will be added in the next couple of days.

Also worth bearing in mind we now have some of the stricter measures in the whole of Europe currently.. Spains rolling average is coming down with out having to od as much

"When will this shit end?" is my favourite thread here. It covers a number of topics and is always full of interesting, knowledgeable and yes, at times, quite random facts. All of which I appreciate being posted. I used to be a fairly regular poster on this forum (and elsewhere) but nowadays, for my own peace of mind, I prefer to mostly just read and learn from other posters, particularly in this thread. So don't change. Keep on posting as you have been and carry on keeping the British end up. Cheers!

Why do you find this information?

I think you click on the more on cases bit on the post of the graphs you did.... I think

Yeah, there's no "by specimen date" data for today yet and the rest doesn't seem reliable as it is saying there was only 82 specimen cases yesterday, the only thing we have to go on is positive cases reported.

The rest takes time to catch up.

Plus sometimes the specimen data has been higher than recorded positive cases, so it tends to even out when those cases a reported a ew days late or however it works

A friend of mine just messaged me to say she'd gone in to give some blood for this study yesterday and she fainted. She's still in the study, but going to be sticking to swabs and not bloods going forward.

Not sure if it's the same study as they are coming to our house to take it apparently? Not in the least concerned about the blood tests. I donate blood every three months which will be a lot more!

Oooh, how much are the vouchers worth? 👀

It's £50 for the first appointment and I think £25 for every one thereafter. You can make about £400 in vouchers if you do all the appointments. Valid at Amazon and a load of places. Sadly I don't think you can apply unless you get sent the letter though?

If I read it correctly these 6k cases are spread over the dates from over the past week.. And also I got my info from the Spain thing from the coronavirus world tracker which shows the rolling average clearly falling.. Until today where it has gone up again a bit

@pryce data should be taken from the ECDC and not from worldometer. Whilst worldometer displays correct data from the UK, the data recorded from France, Spain, Germany etc is wildly incorrect. The cases and case rate vastly differs from the official figures from the ECDC. https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/download-todays-data-geographic-distribution-covid-19-cases-worldwide

Here is data from the last 9 days from Spain. Note they don't record on weekends so the 31428 figure is numbers spread out from 3 days.

at the height they thought 10 timers as much

At the height they say there were 100,000 cases a day.

Obviously 6k is an underestimate, but hopefully not as big an underestimate as before.

The covid tracker app now says 12k cases a day, so 12% of the first wave peak ATM if it's accurate.

Ah, I might have just invented that in my mind. All she said was that she was giving bloods for a study - so they could have come to her! She got a letter in the post inviting her to take part, as you did - apparently it was recruited from a survey for ONS but she forgot when she filled that in!
Come to think of it I think I completed the same survey. Haven't had an invitation letter though!

Someone else here said they got  letter from doing an ONS study but I'm pretty sure I haven't ever done one. Also ours was just addressed to "The resident" so must have been done by area? Who knows though.
