Not sure if Starmer will manage this...but Long Bailey really should have just deleted the tweet and come out with a statement apologising for any offence caused, she hadn't read the whole article etc etc. Why the feck do those on the left have to keep implying Israel is some how at fault for all the world's ills. apparently she refused to apologise and was then not taking calls for 4 hours before starmer sacked her. https://m.huffingtonpost.co.uk/amp/entry/keir-starmer-rebecca-long-bailey_uk_5ef50f91c5b6acab283efcb2/?iuw=&__twitter_impression=true
DeanoL
Starmer had to bench RLB as he just can't risk being tarred with the same anti-Semitism stuff that sunk Corbyn. Honsestly doesn't even matter if it's true or not, just that idea floating around would be a disaster. What he needs to do now is replace with someone else from the left of the party to make it clear that it was done because of what she said, and not because he wanted to clear out the last of the Corbynites. steviewevie
From Guardian live feed... Austria: 40% of residents in coronavirus 'ground zero' ski resort have antibodies Philip Oltermann Some 40% of residents in the Tyrolean skiing resort that has been described as a possible “ground zero” for the pandemic in Europe have developed Covid-19 antibodies, scientists have found. Scientists from the university of Innsbruck tested 80% of the population of Ischgl, a popular Austrian skiing destination from which tourists have been confirmed to have carried the virus to Germany, Britain, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and even Brazil and Israel. Of 1,259 adults and 214 children tested, 42.5% had developed antibodies for the virus. The director of the university’s Institute for Virology, Dorothee von Laer, on Thursday described the result as the higher level of infection confirmed across the globe so far. Of those infected, only 15% had experienced any sorts of symptoms, the study found, meaning that as many as 85% experienced the infection without noticing. I said this yesterday but he’s now come across as much more decisive as Johnson who refuses to sack those close to him.

SalviaPlath
Jenrick potentially did something quite serious that deserves having the whip removed. It should probably be more than just a sacking. The RLB thing is just a factional witch hunt. I was bothered about it but it's how the political game is played I suppose. Quark
Not interested in getting into a Sco vs Eng, Sturgeon vs Johson, independence vs devolution debate with this. Just a potentially positive piece of news from north of the border. Clearly still not perfect and she may be talking up the positives, but the numbers trend is definitely in the right direction. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53195166 Edited June 26, 2020 by Quark

The crime for which she's been sacked is anti-semitism. She's completely innocent of that, as is Maxine Peake - regardless of the fact that they got it wrong about Israeli Security forces and neck-kneeling etc. Corbyn was absolute rubbish and threw the general election away with his complete failure to handle Brexit. But the anti-semitism stuff was a politically-motivated attack which they should have fought rather than caved-in to. Because they didn't, we're now in a situation whereby Labour Leaders feel compelled to equate any criticism of Zionism and the right-wing drift of Israeli politics with anti-semitism. It isn't. When I was marching against the second Gulf War in 2003, I ended up being swallowed up by a large group of Jewish anti-zionist/anti-war protesters, who were scathing about the right-wing politics and zealotry which was taking hold of their country. Many of the architects of the British Labour Party were radical left-wing Jews and it's unbelievable that the current leadership is now frightened to call out the pro-Trump, right-wing zealots who currently wield a frightening amount of influence in Israel for fear of being accused of anti-semitism. I'm happy to support Starmer because it's necessary for victory - the majority of the electorate are basically morons who put empty slogans and haircuts before any true understanding of economics or politics. However, is a victory built on capitulation to the extreme right worth winning?
steviewevie
They brought up a conspiracy theory about Israel police and connected it to the killing of George Floyd and the whole black lives matter thing. This is completely different to critisizing Israel for it's foreign policy and how it treats palestinans. The Socialist Campaign Group yesterday published a letter doing just this, signed by all the corbynite bigwigs...and there was no accusations of antisemitism, nothing from Starmer or any Jewish groups. Because there is nothing wrong with that. But just making up shit cause it fits your agenda is maybe ok for a lefty actress, but the shadow education sec should know better. I'm surprised they haven't blamed Israel for coronavirus yet. Edited June 26, 2020 by steviewevie 1

Ozanne
Rightly or wrongly this is really all that matters If we ever want to get rid of the Tories perception needs to change and Keir understands that. In the same YouGov poll 39% think Jenrick should go. Edited June 26, 2020 by Ozanne
